Review: Grass seed - Beautiful grass, but it took forever to germinate; difficult to grow. Once it was growing, it was lovely.
Review: MY NEW THICK, DARK, GREEN LAWN- How I did It! - I bought this brand of seed this time last year. If there is any question or concern about the quality of this seed, I will tell you the absolute truth as I experienced it. If you, in fact, want dark green Kentucky Bluegrass, OutSidePride Midnight is a serious product. Grass, in general, are organic like humans. It need nutrients, water, sun, and grooming. From the very beginning, I did my research on Youtube.com for the best available information and realized in general, weeds love acidic soil and grass love alkaline soil. My recommendation is to get a professional soil test done first. After that, expect to do a little work for your green lawn. I did a total of about 10 - 15 hours of actual hands-on work. It worked out to be nearly 30 minutes per week. If you cannot manage something like that, I would suggest re-sodding your lawn and forget the seeding. I had many weeds in my lawn and my soil test confirmed a very high acidic lawn. So the first things was to lime the heck out of my soil. Lime (potassium) creates dark green blades of grass. I used a retail lawn care service to handle it. They also applied weed killing and fertilizer treatments. I did not allow them to apply seeding, because they did not have bluegrass. So treat your soil and kill your weeds. Next, dethatch and aerate your lawn in that order. Loosen the matte and then put holes in the ground. Some say leave the plugs that are made, but remove them- open up your lawn. Use a contractor or do it yourself. I had them both done twice in one month. After each process, I applied seed; making sure I tried to place seeds inside the holes. I both watered and timed my processes in front of expected rain. Here is the kicker, I personally applied this Midnight Bluegrass seed by hand. I did not use an applicator. I do believe the term is called "Over-Seeding". I may have taken it quite literally, because each time I applied seeds by hand, it almost looked like snow on the ground, minus the color. I probably used 40 lbs - 50 lbs of seed in a 350 square feet of area. What I was going for was treating soil, opening up the lawn, kill all weeds (declare War on them, because they are persistent), and seed an area in the morning going to work and another area in the evening- took me 2 - 3 minutes each time. The thicker you apply the seed, the more the weeds will not return; they get crowded out. The grass takes over. I had the greenest grass during the winter months. I was pleasantly surprised that my grass stayed green at freezing temperatures. The next Spring season, just before the rains, the weeds started back, but I had contractors apply weed killer early. They said they did not want to do it so son, but they wanted to get paid, so they did what I asked- applied it early and often (every two weeks). When the rains started, EVERYBODY, who was in eye-shot of my lawn, made an comment about how green and thick my lawn was, compared to most others in the neighborhood. I cut it once a week, because it really grows fast and tall, especially now in April/ May 2016. In the attached photo, you will see 2 - 1/2 lawn bags of fresh clippings. It was 2 weeks since the last cut. For the first time this 2016 Spring season, I just applied another layer of seed, but this time, I loosely laid $1.50 per 10 lb bag of Top Soil- I paid $6.00 and covered seeded bald spots and placed that still had a bit of previous different seed type/s. It rained 3 hours later; yep, I timed it, so now the new seed and TopSoil is quickly settling. The photos do not include the recent TopSoil application. If you look carefully, you can see my neighbor's lawns. Their lawn is still looking like hay. I hope my experience helps!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Are the seeds ceritifed sod qaulity?**
A: No Matt, unfortunately the seeds are not. Seed Super Store in Buffalo New York has certified Midnight, but it is quite expensive.

**Q: Is this a fine leaf and is it self spredding?**
A: This is a very fine leaf. Not a lot of support to walk on, but on the flip side, if you are mulching, a fine blade will break down and return to the soil quicker. KBG spreads via rhizomes which are underground roots designed for spreading the plant laterally. This root shoots out an inch or so and shoots up a new daughter plant, then spreads a little more and repeats. Each seed planted should do this. One seed will not spread but so far, so if you come back down the road with a thatch rake or mechanical tool that will break this root, the daughter plant should then become a mother plant and start spreading again. Once established for a few months, you can put down a pre-emergent herbicide like Prodiamine or something else which will prevent 99% of the annual weeds that pop up in lawns, which is the majority of weeds you have in lawns. The other weeds you can hand pull, including the root, or get a small envelope moistener with a sponge on one end and fill it with Glyphosate and apply directly to the perineal plant you need to kill. Once dead, this weed will decompose and leave a dead spot. Since the pre-emergent will prevent new plants, the rhizomes should spread into this area and fill in the void over time. Just avoid this seed like the plague if you have pets. I put this seed down as a test and it is gorgeous and I love it, but my 500 sq. ft. test in a 10,000 sq. ft. back yard failed miserably due to pet urine. with 10,000 sq. ft. of lawn, it was not like they only urinated in that 500 sq. ft. patch, and there are so many dead spots it looks like black patches on a Dalmatian. If you don't have pets or plan on getting pets, then you're fine. Otherwise, choose a different type of seed that is highly tolerant of pet urine. I live in the transition zone and found Zoysia grass to work very well for my situation.

**Q: Does this have good tread wear if there is a lot of traffic on it...say from a very active dog?**
A: Yes, but you have try to keep the dog off the grass until it gets established. When I first planted the grass it came up great but you have to make sure your soil is right (fertilized) and get well established. Once it's established you will love it!

**Q: Can anyone tell me the seed to area ratio? I've never planted grass before and have no idea how much I'd need for my yard less than an acre.**
A: Our lawn is 1200 sq ft. We established by hand weeding including undesirable grass, successive aerations & topdressings & overseeding. We used 10# the first year, 5# the next few years in 2 applications, and now a 5# bag lasts about 3 years. We continue to hand weed & overseed to maintain but it's not much at all. A neglected lawn is a headache, a small welltended lawn is beautiful. Lots and lots and lots of lime for this grass. Lots of deep water & cool springs and autumns. Think White Cliffs of Dover. This grass isn't a good choice for much of the USA, check your zone and rainfall before committing.

### ⭐ Once a Loyal Customer — Now Deeply Disappointed
*by D***L on June 22, 2025*

Quality: Value for money: I’ve been a loyal fan of this company for years and even referred friends and fellow lawn care enthusiasts because their seed used to deliver great results. During a past renovation, their product helped transform my lawn — so I expected that same level of quality again. Unfortunately, things have changed. They’ve quietly started coating their seed — a tactic that drastically reduces how much actual grass seed you receive. I bought a 5 lb bag and ended up with only around 3.25 lbs of usable seed. If you bought a 25 lb bag, you’d only get about 16 lbs of real seed. That’s a huge difference for anyone who carefully plans their application. I believe in transparency and value — and this feels like a gimmick. No one wants to feel misled, especially when investing in their home or yard. Just be aware before you buy.
