Neither of them is "the voice of Iced Earth," seeing as this band has had four different vocalists. And Owens is talented in his own right.This album does not sound like anything the band has done previously. It doesn't sound like Framing Armageddon for obvious reasons. I didn't much care for Framing, and it wasn't that Owens was a terrible singer. It was that I couldn't tell the chorus from the verse. The singing was bombastic all the way through, which ended up detracting from the album.This album is a very nice combination of Owens-style choruses and Barlow-style verses. Those who were hoping for a straight Barlow album will be disappointed, but those who want to be treated with something different from one of the best metal bands in history should pick up this album.Some reviewers have called this album "boring." It is true that there isn't a huge variety between the songs like you would find on Something Wicked This Way Comes. This album is a concept album, and is meant to sound epic. It is loud, it is ferocious, and it is solid. It does not sound like some last minute effort the band threw together because Barlow came back. Well whoever did, obviously has not experienced Iced Earth... The Crucible of Man is the epic conclusion to Iced Earth's concept album series "Something Wicked". This is one of the few albums (Something Wicked This Way Comes, and Framing Armageddon included)that manage to tell a story expertly interwoven with and accompanied by gut wrenching heart stopping metal. Matt Barlow has rightfully taken his throne on the pedestal of metal, as Iced Earth's lead vocalist, and trust me, you're glad he did. From passionate to powerful to angry(divide and devour), Barlow is a GOD. Schaffer has outdone himself on this album, from the Uber-dynamic choruses to the spellbinding lyrics, his most recent opus is one for the storybooks.Each song flows well into the next, and deftly adds layer upon layer of meaning to the story of The Wicked One.Iced Earth does not fail to deliver, and if you have any sense as to what excellent musicianship is you will know that this fits the ticket. As you may know, a vocal change happened between part I & part II. I thought Tim "Ripper" Owens vocals on part I were awesome and at first was dissipointed with part II due to parts I & II having different vocalists and losing continuity. However, now I think it fits very well since part II revolves around Set Abominae being born and coming of age and has more of a dark feel to it also, more of a "first person" view point (enter Matt Barlow as Set Abominae). Whereas part I was very sci-fi and seems more "Third Person narrative" of the story and awesomely sung by Tim "Ripper" Owens and fits well with the story setting up the coming of the "Wicked One" and the back-story. I hope this makes sense to you; it barely does to me, ha! Anyway, I love both parts I & II and prefer to listen to them back-to-back. If I was stranded on an Island and could only keep one of the parts to listen to, I would choose part I since I think it is just much funner and better of a stand-alone record than part II. Anyway, I recommend you buy both parts and listen to them with headphones. My wife and I both like Iced Earth; she prefers Matt's voice and I prefer Tim's voice, oh well. She likes part II better, so there you have it.
