I was fortunate that it was still covered under the Bed Bath and Beyond warranty and they took back the broken one and I got a new one free of charge so I actually paid $30 more and upgraded to the newer model. It seemed like the screw and bolt were glued together, we could not unscrew it at all, my sub and tried a few times using different pliers and it wasn't loosening at all. I'm afraid we bought the replacement part and wasted our money on ot as we could not use it. Several youtube videos show how to install this. Basically you remove the bottom cover (four screws), and hold the shaft in place so that you can grab the broken gear base with pliers and unscrew it. The video I saw said to use a rag to grip the fan on the bottom to hold the shaft in place. That may work in some cases, but on my nutribullet the fan would slip on the shaft- it didn't hold the shaft well enough to unscrew the old/broken base gear. But on the bottom of the shaft there is a slot that fits a flat screwdriver. Just make sure you realize that the threads turn opposite of what you are expecting and have someone help hold the machine for for you. I chiseled away the plastic on the bottom of the blender so I could get to the groove that allows you to keep the motor from turning. It was easier than taking it apart. Afte 2o minutes (I have no idea why it took that long, haha) I almost gave up but I gave it one last shot.....and it worked!!! I simply used some needle nose pliers and popped the base off then held the fan with a towel. The old gear (which is left-handed threads) came off after some muscling around with it and then i easily spun the new one on.
