Put the pins in first and then spin the dial one whole rotation before setting the current time. This way, the pins will activate or deactivate the timer depending on the current time.For example. Say you want to set the timer to turn on at 8AM and turn off at 8PM, and you do the initial setup at noon. If you set the time first and then insert the pins, the timer may not be turned on right away, as it should be, because noon is between 8AM and 8PM. If you insert the pins first, and spin the dial, the Green pin at 8AM will flick the timer on, and when you plug it in, it will be activated as it should be. If you decided to do the initial setup at 9PM, if you put the pins in first and spin the dial, the timer would automatically be deactivated by the red pin, because 9PM is not between 8AM and 8PM.If you follow the other answer, you may need to manually flick on ON/OFF dial on the top. **Q: When the timer trips from On to Off, do you get a spark?** A: Yes, it sparks (tiny), but it's internal at the switch.
