We ordered 4 of these, as some reviewers mentioned the possibility of goofing up the soldering required to complete the kit. We received all 4 within the stated shipping times, in excellent condition, and as described. My husband is the electrical whiz, so he was tasked with the assembly/soldering aspect, and did so without any difficulty. So now we how four working scanners! They worked beautifully in our painted Cylon pumpkins!Although he did the soldering, the instructions were easy enough that with my basic skills, I could have constructed the kit without any difficulty. The only problem we had was with our own soldering iron, and was in no way a reflection of the product. As recommended on an independent Cylon pumpkin carving instructional site, we placed the units inside a plastic ziplock bag and propped it up with toothpicks, which worked exceptionally well. (If using in a pumpkin, I would recommend cutting sufficient amounts of interior pumpkin flesh around the 'eye' slit to accommodate the extra width of the circuit board to allow the lights to seat forward enough for the full effect.)The instructions state to mount the 3-speed mode switch on the front of the circuit board. We recommend however, that it be mounted on the back. It is easy enough to change where it is mounted during kit construction. For pumpkin use, It is virtually impossible to change the speed setting if front mounted. Just consider your usage before deciding on where to mount the switch. Now to create the rest of my Cylon army!!

    Well it's a nice kit..but I couldn't get it working.

Seems to be a cool kit. With the instructions downloaded from their site, it's pretty clear how to do it. However...somehow it all went wrong. At first only a few lights lit up, so I figured I missed a soldering (my first soldering). So I did it some more. ..and then the battery box got very very hot, and the battery box wires started to melt and now nothing works. Granted I am new at all this and it's probably me..but it would be lovely (as this is considered a beginner project I think) if there were some tips on potential gotchas or troubleshooting. Also I got my kit in a physical store for only $13. Not sure why it's so much more at amazon.

    Yes, Get One.

This is gonna be short, and please, no one flame me. If you need to hate on someone, find someone else...There's not a lot of options on the market for the cycling larson style light system. The ones that are there are nearly 100% build your own kit, like this one. The ones that aren't, well, my opinion is they suck. With that said, this is the first soldering kit I've ever done before. EVER. I've spliced wires before and built train sets and computers, but never a full on circuit board. I learned a lot with this thing. The reason I'm endorsing this particular model over others is because they have an uber good support community and store to help you get any of the custom mods you are looking for. Personally, I took one of these boards and changed the lights over to blue, then stuck it in a computer case. Looks great. My only complaint with the thing is their method of adding the power supply. I get that they're setting it up for 3.5 volts with the red lights, but if you want to push anything more powerful through it, like blue, you really need to increase the wire size. Well, with the current setup it's a bit tricky because the holes for the wire are soooo small. Other than that, the thing is awesome. Do yourself a favor, get a good soldering iron, solder, look at all the posting before you make your order, then get 2 of them. Just in case you fry the first. Yes, I'd buy another from these guys if I needed one. They'd be my first choice.
