I needed a mortising machine for a project of building 12 chairs. There are lots of rave reviews already out there, so I won't repeat all the good stuff. Just believe it! What I will do is to defend this little machine's only few weak spots, or at least the criticisms in the reviews. The main one is about the table being too small, and because it is made of MDF, "cheap." Well, the table is actually the cast iron base, and it has a piece of MDF bolted down to it to protect your chisels should you drill clear through a piece of wood. Others complain the table is too small. Not exactly sure why you would need it to be any bigger, but I had no issues with that doing 144 mortises in some pretty strange shapes of wood. The hold-down is, in fact, poorly designed, but it's such and easy fix that it is laughable. I just cut two small wedges of wood and installed them on the bottoms of the two hold-down arms (with a wrap of masking tape) so that now they press down evenly on the workpiece instead of only on the side toward the machine. I clamped a stop onto my work table to locate the end of the workpiece and the little vise did the rest. The three chisels that ship with this machine are incredibly sharp and worked perfectly. Got a used one without a key, and none of my chuck keys fit.** A: It is a special oversized chuck. It can be ordered from Jet at 800-274-6848. I know with larger stock the collumn can be rotated 180 degrees, but with the fense can it take up to 6" stock?** A: Hi, I just measured and from the bit tip to the table it's 4". Six inch stock will not fit. Hope this helps. **Q: What chisels does this come with, if any? The description says it comes with three, but I didn't see any further mention of the mortising chisels.** A: Sorry for the delayed response. I found 3 that came with mine. 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch chisels. Well built and worth every cent. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good Machine For the Money *by K***N on March 10, 2005* You cant really go wrong here with this mortise machine. I read all the reviews prior to buying this machine about the shipping damage and was holding my breath hopeing mine would make it in one piece but I have to say the packing could use some work. The cast iron base was cracked about 4 inches when it arrived. I called Jet and they sent one out UPS ground right away with no problems. The only other problem I found with the machine is the fence is not straight. Its off about 3/16 inch or better on alignment due to the hole not being bored straight through the body of the machine during manufacture. I cut some really nice mortise joints through some red oak and the machine works very good. The bits that came with it are very sharp and seem to function great. Would have gave it 5 stars if not for the fence problem.
