It is approxamately 1/2" wide. I threw it away as it didn't fit my recliner so I can say for certain but I know it is not 3/4" wide. **Q: How exactly do you attach the ends of the spring, very hard to strech it** A: Make sure your recliner is in the position whereas the current spring is in the un-stretched position. With the new replacement spring in your hand put one end in a vice or have someone hold it with pliers. Bend the spring a tad in a arc shape and put a nickel [or quarter] between two coils. Continue to do this on one side of the spring and then the other until you have the spring long enough to easily hook into your recliner. It will take quite a few coins. Once you have hooked the new spring in place remove the coins using pliers or needle nose pliers. **Q: Is 5" the overall length including the hooks or just the length of the spring?** A: The 5" does include the overall length of the hooks and the spring. It has worked great. Less than four months after purchase and installed on my recliner, the rubberized end of the spring has opened up and fell off the recliner. I have two of these, one on each side so, let's just say I'm not feeling too sure about the other spring either. I have bent the stretched end back and put it back on the chair is fell off of (temporary fix) But, now the opposite end is failing too !
