The patterns are in both forms (written and designed, with symbols). Acronyms and symbols are explained and at the end of the book there's a chapter with stitches explained. I love the book but I'd not recommend it to an absolute beginner. Most suited for intermediate level. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Brilliant, but not for complete beginners *by A***R on 16 March 2021* This is a brilliant book, with lots of lovely squares to make. Don't be put off by some of the negative reviews regarding print size. I didn't have any problems reading the patterns, and I have to wear glasses. Each square fits onto one page, which is great when crocheting as you don't need to keep turning the pages over. There seem to be lots of complaints about the book being written in US terms, but that shouldn't put you off either. It's very easy to convert to UK terms in your head as you work if you need too. It really is an essential skill to master as so many patterns are written in US terms. Other people have commented that not all the squares come out the same size. That's true if you follow the patterns exactly as written, but I very easily made some slight alterations (using a different size hook or different stitch) and was able to produce squares which were all the same size. I was able to join them very easily to make a baby blanket as shown in the photos.
