In balanced mode the sound is absolutely sublime - even though the Aryas are not easy to drive, I only need to use the medium gain when using the balanced output (high gain for the single-ended output). Lots of power, clear and precise sound, and a wonderful sound stage which sounds even more 3D in balanced mode. These are linear-sounding devices so they will enable your headphones to show their true colours without any colouration - my Focal Clears are beautifully balanced with heavenly mids, while the Aryas are beautifully extended in the lows and highs with a tall and deep soundstage and wonderful sound layering. I used to run my headphones using a PC sound card (Asus Xonar Essence STX II) thinking that since it's powerful enough (because it is) to drive them, there's no point in spending money on an external DAC and amp. This combo has changed my mind. I've realised that an audio set-up is only as good as the weakest link in the chain and there are no shortcuts here if you want to experience your headphones' full potential. I have been an avid audio chaser for years , owned many different headphones.. Grado, meze , Sony , campfire audio, audio technia and various hifiman plus many others. I also own the Ananda nano which at there price point imo are a steal! These are just that bit better...more natural and detailed, but both are truly amazing headphones that I can recommend whole heartedly and especially with the ef600 r2r dac amp.. This is not a paid review or for gain, I still own grado ps500e and also a ifi audio idsd2 which also are fantastic... But pound for pound hifiman kill it IMHO and trounce nearly everything else in there price range. Some of the old timers ( no prejudice I'm one of them) still go on about hifiman quality control, honestly I have owned 4 pairs of there cans with no problems what so ever , I feel you can get good and bad with any company/ design it product..
