Review: Excellent choice - Excellent product and easy to use. Options for printing the labels are ideal for the purpose. I have already changed batteries and the cartridge, and the machine continues to work very well.
Review: It's a good label maker. Has some flaws though. - I'm on my second one of these. The first one lasted 5+ years and still works. Kind of. Read on. First: Most any device with a keyboard is QWERTY-style, which this label maker is. But you'd be surprised how many label makers, including other DYMO models are not QWERTY. I've been using a keyboard on a daily basis for over 30 years now, so any keyboard that isn't QWERTY drives me nuts. Second: It's pretty sturdy. The rubber bumpers allow for some drops and bumps. My biggest complaint is the biggest weak point of this model. The weak point on this model is the tape cartridge retention system It's a bunch of little plastic hooks that snap over the tape cartridge body. After a lot of use, they wear out and no longer retain the cartridge securely. You can't bend them back because they are plastic and fatigued. If you use the label maker often, they may wear out sooner than you'd like. At that point you have to wrap a rubber band around the tape door. At that point it will still print but not reliably because the cartridge isn't sitting like it's supposed to. I've used this model to print everything from standard labels in all sizes it uses (1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", but I prefer the 3/4". You can fit three lines of 12-point text on a 3/4" label. I also have printed heat shrink tube labels which are more gimmicky than useful in my opinion. But, YMMV. The Dymo brand labels are stupidly expensive. There are many "compatible" labels on desertcart. Find a brand that works well enough for your liking and just buy a ton of them before they change the overseas unpronounceable name to yet something else you can't pronounce and now you're scared to buy it again because you're not sure if it's the same thing. I have used aftermarket labels in this printer for basically the entire time. 75% of the time, they work all the time. Again, find what works well enough and stick with it. As long as you are REALLY careful when inserting/removing the tape cartridges, this printer will last you a long time. Takes 6AA batteries, which last a good 6 months with moderate use. Dymo sells a rechargeable batter for this but it's pricey and prefer just being able to put new batteries in the thing and keep printing.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Hi. :) Why is this better than the Brother labelmakers? Thank you. :)**
A: I have 2 Brothers, and 2 Dymos. In both, I have a smaller, more common unit, links anyone could buy in Walmart, and in both I have an orange, industrial use model. The things that jump out to me, are that the labels for the Dymos are definitely cheaper, all around, but especially if you have to buy them at a store. I am going to speak only of the industrial models. The Dymo has rubber around about 50%of the unit, and on all corners. The Brother, on the other hand, has rubber around about 50%of the unit, but it only goes around the bottom half of the machine, and not around the top half of the machine, which has the large corners, as well as the cut off handle. It doesn't make sense, to be honest. Also, where there is rubber, on the bottom half, it doesn't cover the entire side, it only covers the inner half, and it is actually inset, so if the machine was dropped on the bottom half, it is unlikely that rubber is actually make contact, but the plastic would. Again, it doesn't make sense at all. All around the Dymo appears to have rubber, exactly where it should be, whereas the Brother has rubber in the spots that are least likely to make contact with a hard surface if dropped.
As for ease of use, the brother is slightly smaller, which means that it has smaller buttons. Also all of the settings have to be set through an internal menu. There is no way of setting your favorites that I know of. When selecting items in the menu, it is not always as intuitive as it should be. The keyboard is in alphabetical order (which drives me crazy!) The screen is a regular LCD, with a grey background and black letters. The one positive over the Dymo, is that the cutter handle is large, in a good spot for applying smooth and firm pressure.
The Dymo is set up to be easy in many ways. The keyboard is QWERTY, the buttons are all different sizes, with the more used ones being larger. Most of the functions are available via a button, although some buttons serve two purposes. The secondary function is accessed through use of a special shift button, that is orange to coincide with the orange color of the secondary function on the button. I find this to be one of the minor downsides of the Dymo, because this colors it's somewhat difficult to make out, especially on the darker colored keys. In fact, on the dark grey keys/buttons, they are nearly impossible to read. It surprises me because most things on this unit are well-thought-out. The screen on the Dymo is orange background with black characters, and the contrast can be easily set. In fact, it makes me think back to the brother, and I don't even know if that contrast can be adjusted, because if it a can, that feature is hidden somewhere in an internal menu. The coup de gras is that the Dymo has a large button beside the screen with a light bulb on it that can be pushed to backlight the screen, which stays on for a few moments and then turns off. Where the Dymo really sets itself apart from the Brother, is the ability to print different types of labels, all that can be accessed with a button, but who's features can be adjusted via an internal menu that often pops up automatically when a label type is selected, and is usually very intuitive easy to set. It can also print labels specifically for wires or cables, that can be wrap around the wire or cable, or to be made into a flag, with the type viewable on both sides of the flag. It has settings for Breakers boxes, modules, and even barcodes. Once you create a label a specific way that you like, and use often, you can save it as a favorite, w/a special button, and is then accessed via another specific button. The keys are made of several different colors, and the Dymo also has a special rechargeable lithium battery available, but it is $30. Therefore, the Dymo, in my opinion, is the superior unit. I am going to try to submit pics above, so look out for those. Thank you.

**Q: What is the shrink ratio of the heat-shrink tape?**
A: The half inch shrink tube can do down to a 14 gauge wire I have not tried smaller yet

**Q: Does it print the same as the 5200? I have a 5200 and the screen is malfunctioning but I want all my labels to look uniform.**
A: Hi David, we are sorry to hear that your Rhino 5200 is not working. I hereby confirm Rhino 4200 prints same as Rhino 5200.

**Q: how to print to heat shrink tube?**
A: You can not print on regular heat shrink tubing. You have to purchase the special" Heat-Shrink Tube" (cassette) designed for the Demo Rhino 4200 Label Maker.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ptctical
*by M***N on April 21, 2025*

I was skeptical at first, what with this being on the lower rungs of model ladder, but while I'm sure the more expensive models probably offer better features, they're also more expensive and I'm not sure I'd need them just to label things around the house. First thing I did was to use shrink tubing (bought separately) to label 2 million electrical wires for my car audio build - and I really could not be happier. I haven't played too much with various printing features, customs, modes etc. but what limited time I had with this machine so far, there appear to be sufficient number of options to label just about anything I'd want, in a way I'd want it. My only bit of gripe is that it does waste ~0.5" of tape on either side of the label for padding, there does not appear a way to adjust it. So for me it's a fantastic tool at a reasonable price.
