It's basically just open-shut, open-shut. I would recommend pulling your hair tight (away from the scalp) while the clamps are closed, which will make the wave more defined (same technique works with a regular curler). Also, if you want the ends to curl a certain way, once it is clamped you can kind of wrap the end around the curler. Final suggestion: use a thermal hairspray.
