I had the one speed unit. The cheaper one. The two speed unit for 49.99 is the one used in therapists offices. Save up until you can get the 49.99 dollar one instead. This is quieter than my fan. **Q: smell** A: I have used a Marpac White Noise machine for 45 years. I wore one out after 20-30 years, but the second one is still going strong. I have a spare just in case - since I cannot sleep without one unless totally exhausted. They are fantastic. I take it with me when I travel to motels, relatives, etc. Everyone in the family has one - my ex bought one when we divorced; my son grew up and bought one and we all use them nightly. No odors at all. **Q: How do you use the rotation of the CAP or COLLAR? I know the tone/volume changes but is it louder when more caps are open, what do you prefer?** A: it seems louder when the caps are open. they have to be open to allow for proper ventilation of the unit. **Q: can it mask my sound?** A: If you are referring to noises like you snoring or something like that it would probably require the device to be between you and others. She has always slept with it and I think part of the reason she is such a good sleeper is because of this! For the first little bit she was in our room and I have really missed using this at night to sleep! I almost bought myself one!Why this is perfect for baby:-The sound is not recorded so it doesnt repeat the same pattern over and over.-I love that it just has an on/off switch, I didnt want a sound machine that was going to turn off after my daughter fell asleep-It helps cover noises in the rest of the house. My daughter will sleep through the doorbell ringing and the fire alarm going off but as soon as I go into her room and turn off the sound machine she start to stir-It's pretty portable, we always take it on vacations/ trips to grandmas-You can change the sound by rotating the top part or the sides, if we know things are going to be a little louder we can adjust the sound conditioner accordinglyOther thoughts:-I like to sleep with a fan so I found the noise this makes to be very soothing. If you like to sleep with a fan then you will love this!-Dont expect this to cover up every noise, thats not really the point, it will help drown out other noises so if you are asleep or working you wont be distracted by them. I know some people complain about this, but to completely block out all other noises that sound conditioner would have to be really loud and I think that would be worse than the offending noises. It's sort of like wearing earplugs, you can still sort of hear things but they dont bother you anymore.-Be to follow the instructions not place the sound conditioner right next to your head (like your nightstand) and it will work better. This seems counterintuitive, but it works.Bottom line: This is worth every penny! For us, this was a splurge. We didnt have a lot to spend on baby stuff but this made the cut and was WELL worth it, still in use today (1.5 years later). We are about to have another baby so we just bought another to have in our room when she gets home from the hospital and I am excited to keep it when she shares a room with her sister! Don't be surprised if you buy this for your kid and end of stealing it from them! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Overall great product *by K***K on December 16, 2013* We use this as a white noise machine to help our infant daughter sleep. It works pretty well, but my only complaint is that I wish it could get a little bit louder. We live in a small house, and noise from other rooms in the house is still audible (although faint) over this machine. It's a great deal for the price though, and it's not so bad that I am going to buy a different machine. I like that it runs on an on/off switch rather than a timer, as some other brands do - this way, when I turn this machine on, it is on until I turn it off - no spontaneous shut-offs that lead to her waking up.UPDATE: 9/20/2015 - almost 2 years later, and I feel like I should update this review. We have been using this sound machine every night (and nap time) since we bought it. I originally thought it wasn't quite loud enough for our daughter's nursery, but over time I have come to realize that it is just the right volume and level to help her sleep without me having to be concerned about her hearing. There are other 'sleep noise' products that are probably just too LOUD to be using every night. With this Dohm sound machine, I don't worry about whether her hearing is being negatively impacted by the noise. It IS possible to hear loud noises outside of the room when using this machine, but the machine provides a great sound to dull most noises to a background level. It also is not so loud that it is distracting or intrusive in a way that would keep you from falling asleep.In the 2 years we have been using this, my daughter has slept great. We even pack it with us when we travel - I am willing to give up valuable suitcase carry-on room for this machine when we fly, so that should let you know how great I think it is.
