Ranking with the Scharnhorst, she was the biggest and most powerful battleship in the German Fleet of those days. Her displacement had been announced to be 26,000 tons, but in fact her standard displacement was 31,800 tons. The main armament consisted of nine 28 cm guns, which were smaller in caliber than those of the same class ships possessed by other countries. The other armament, however, was powerful enough and consisted of twelve 15 cm guns, fourteen 10 cm AA guns, sixteen 37 mm AA machine guns, ten 20 mm AA machine guns and six 53 cm torpedo tubes. She was protected with strong armor and, in spite of her large displacement, had a speed of 32 knots. All of these factors combined to make the Gneisenau one of the first-rank high-speed battle cruisers in the world. The base of the model is the waterline of the ship, everything below the line of water on a vessel is not included. Therefore, it does not need a stand to balance the model and can be displayed with a flat base. **Q: Does this Kit have the triple 15" guns from the almost used refit, the historical twin 12"guns, or both?** A: This kit has aimed to replicate the battleship Gneisenau. On the box it says Gneisenau was armed with the guns including: nine 28cm, twelve 15cm, fourteen 105mm and sixteen 37mm. The kit has included them. To covert them in inches it appears a little different from your question. I hope this info does help you to find the answers you are looking for. **Q: Does it float?** A: This is a waterline model kit for display and does not include the bottom of the hull, so it will not float without modifications. **Q: would this be a good model for a 9 year old boy that has never built a model before ? if not what would be a good choice for him ?** A: I would not say that. The instructions do not have English and are only illustrations with Japanese instructions. I would look at Revell/Monogram ship kit that you will have English.
