The foam material of the Qanvee Sponge Filter is also the perfect breeding ground for beneficial bacteria and the entire unit is considered a form of mechanical and biological filtration for a planted aquarium tank. Sponge filters are great and commonly used for breeding projects as well. They are gentle and will not trap smaller aquarium inhabitants such as shrimp and fry.
