## Overview

The Astrolabe Geocoin in Antique Bronze is a beautifully crafted collectible measuring 3 3/16" tall and 3/8" thick, perfect for those who appreciate historical artifacts and unique decor.

## Description

The image of the navigator on the front of the Mariner's Astrolabe Geocoin shows how this tool was used when taking a reading from the sun. This Geocoin also has an incorporated raised metal edge around the coin. A real antique mariner's astrolabe would not have this raised edge, but we thought it was important to provide some protection to the spinning alidade. Instead of attaching a large metal ring for the handle, which were typical of old style astrolabes, we attached a rotating clip to make it easier for hooking the astrolabe to a stable item such as a post when taking a reading. The two holes on the spinning alidade are small enough to get a fairly precise reading from sunlight, but are large enough to see through when taking a reading of the North Star, Polaris.

Packaging was good and shipping was quick. The astrolabe is hefty and the silver on bronze design is nice looking. Fit and finish is quite poor though. The sights are not aligned well and the sighting arm itself is wobbly. The base came with a dent in the rim and some scratches. For the price paid I was disappointed in the shoddy workmanship.

Arrived quickly and in good condition! This Geocoin has moving parts like a real astrolabe and is trackable through the CompassRoseGeocoin.com website. I can't vouch for its accuracy since I don't really know how to use an astrolabe but it is attractive just as a novelty item alone. 🙂
