When you take a photo say on a camera, there are differents size settings you can choose whether it be 3mp, 5mp, 8mp etc. the higher the number the bigger and it therefore takes up a lot more space/memory. You can resize your photos, that will help and allow you to hold more photos. Mine held almost 6000 photos so my camera is likely on a lower setting than yours. Check your camera and make sure for the future it's on a lower setting. The good thing about picture keepers is that when you fill one up, the next one picks up where it left off automatically. Unlike USB's you have to load the files manually then when it gets full you have to check where it left off and then continue to manually add files each time. That's the upside of picture keeper, everything is done automatically. It's simple. **Q: All of my photos are on an independent hard drive . How would I use this product with a hard drive ,as I cannot direct the hard drive to do anything** A: I have a desktop computer and an external hard drive. If that's your set up, plug the PK into the computer's USB port, and turn on the external hard drive. The PK will be listed with a unique name under devices and drives (such as E drive). Then copy from the external hard drive (which might be called F drive) to E drive. Hope that's pertinent to your question. **Q: Will it retrieve old photos I have scanned to my computure?** A: Yes, it searches for any photo or graphic in jpeg, or any other photo format. Picture Keeper has solved that problem. It is very easy to use and keeps all the pics safe and protected. It only downloads new pictures that weren't already on it and it has a menu so you can pick the perfect picture for your needs. The software is built into the stick so once you plug it in, it starts, and if it doesn't you click on the world in the bottom left corner of your desktop to bring up the menu, click on computer and the drive will show up with picture keeper on it. Double click it and you are ready to go. Easy and efficient. It finds all files of the kinds you specify and saves copies of them to the Picture Keeper in the same organization as on your hard drive. That is very handy. One caveat so far: The Instruction manual is well written and understandable, but it's wording doesn't always match that of the screen layout/wording.
