Much lighter, much more comfortable. They look like shoes in the photo here on Amazon, but when you wear them, they look like sandals. Those are not black stripes on the side, but openings.A special feature is the way of taking them on or off. It looks like they lace, but the lace is permanent and needs no tying. On the top is a small mechanical release. It is plastic, but very durable and cannot easily be broken. So, no tying of laces, no pulling straps, no tucking away of anything. Now, will they hold up? Time will tell and I will update this if they fail early, but I believe that they will remain durable and comfortable.One more point: I would not wear socks with sandals and think it would look ugly, but some people do. These size 9 men's Teva's; my normal size, however, are not sized for socks and would probably be overly snug if you try. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I've become a Teva fan *by B***D on December 9, 2014* I now have two pairs of Teva Boots (Kimtah Leather, Gannet Suede), and Tanza water proof sandals and they are all I've been wearing since I got them. I ordered these for better protection when getting out of a boat in shallow water in rivers and the Everglades, but haven't used them yet except for around the house. The soles all have the nice curvature that makes walking easier, and are very good at being non-skid, something my other boots and shoes aren't so good at.Based on other reviews I ordered a size larger in everything except the open toe Tanza sandals. My usual size is 9.5 so I ordered a 10 in all of the closed toe shoes and they have been just fine, and the Tanzas were fine in 9.5. For this particular review I listed their fit as "somewhat small" because they run smaller than normal, though, by now, that is what I expect. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Versatile *by M***E on December 17, 2014* I had never thought about buying a pair of these type of water shoes before, but now I'm glad I did. On a recent camping trip to New Zealand, I discovered these excellent uses:1) Crossing rivers without soaking your boots and without losing your slides (I don't really like sandals on dudes, so I don't wear them often).2) Cave exploration where you need sturdy shoes, but may step in deep puddles.3) Exploring coastal areas where rock clambering may take place.4) Showering in public showers (admittedly, could use slides for this; in my case, wanted to keep the slides dry for "around the van".The shoes are meant to flatten in the back so that they can be used like slides when necessary. This is extremely convenient. Mine are fine to wear barefoot when they are dry or freshly wet. When moist, they start to bother my ankles in the back, but by flattening the backs, I can continue to wear them.They are comfortable for normal all-day wear with socks, and look okay with grey socks (since the shoes are grey). When I needed them in a glow worm cave for an extended time, I wore my socks, even though I knew they'd get wet. Very comfortable this way.Love these shoes for the right purpose. It's just too bad that shoes take up so much room in luggage, but for a big exploration trip, they're worth buying and worth dragging along.
