When his girlfriend tells him that his men wouldn't follow him to a house of ill repute, Max, a general in the Mexican army decides to perform some great acts of heroism. He takes his men over the border into Texas and re-captures the Alamo. This upsets the Texans greatly. The Texas National Guard is sent to retake the mission. Normally this would be easy as Max's men have left all of their ammunition back in Mexico, but the State department insists that no one be killed and so the National Guard also goes in with unloaded weapons.

classic 60’s farce
I last saw this on cable where the print was terrible. This dvd was surprisingly clear and bright for an old movie. The cast is comprised of the usual gang for this type of farce, Harry Morgan, Keenan Wynn, and Jonathan Winters. It’s similar to The Russians Are Coming though not as funny. John Aston is great in his role as Peter Ustinov’s Sergeant who looks out for him. I saw this when I was 8 in the theater, and it was fun to see it again.

Viva Max. A forgotten Gem
This is a laugh a minute! Peter Ustinov is hilarious as Mexican Army General De Santos. John Astin steals the show as Sargento. Jonathan Winters should have had a larger part. Harry Morgan is perfect as the Chief of Police. When General de Santos decides to occupy The Alamo for 13 days hilarious confusion ensues. It’s a shame more people haven’t seen this

Took Too Long to Prove a Point
Okay, I just had go back after some thought as to what was the point of all this? Well, as Ustinov said after being shot at nearly the very end of the film, "There is only so much that a man can take." Ustinov portrayed a very proud well meaning but very sensitive man whose pride was hurt so he takes over the Alamo to prove that his men are loyal to him and that he is not an inept general. It is only after being shot, that he proves his worth and his point. This film of course was made when everything was fair game to make fun of namely the subject of stereotypes and in this case its a lot of the stereotypes about Texas and Mexico and of the people who live there.

Sweet Period Comedy
Serious historians often despise counterfactual questions, the what ifs of history. However, they often make for delightful light fiction. This is in that vein.

VIdeo quality is terrible.
The movie is hilarious with great actors and superb script. However, this DVD from Cheezy Flicks is a terrible copy of the film. Video quality is highly degraded, as if it had been copied from a worn out film copy that had been over worked in movie houses for years. Further, there are snippets in the movie indicating edited cuts. For instance, "She said my men would not follow me into a ___ house."If this is the only release you can find, enjoy the movie. But, look for a used copy (or new) not from with Cheezy Fiix before spending even $5 on this one.

Funny in its time
Saw this movie soon after it came out. Tried watching it again and it's just not funny anymore. Also, nothing to do with the movie itself, the quality of the DVD recording is awful. It's like it was made off a VHS tape from a TV recording. Very poor visual quality and muffled sound. But, I can't say that this is a bad movie, just didn't seem as funny now. Maybe it's just me and my tastes in movies has changed?
