We just returned home from one week at the Outer Banks, and we were pleased with the quality and performance of the Sport-Brella. The "augur end" of the pole allows you to "screw" the pole into the beach sand in an easy manner and it provides for a tight fit in the sand. The "augur end" is made of durable plastic, making it great for beach sand -- don't know how well it would work on a rocky surface. I was not able, however to shorten it and during heavy winds I like to make it shorter. With the umbrella shorter it is less likely to catch the wind.
