I'm not sure if there is a regulation or something that keeps them with specific materials or anything but honestly I have been impressed. The balls are the same weight the material feels great. It looks pretty good for an inexpensive set. My only complaint is that the mallets won't fit back in th_e bag assembled. You'd have to break them down each time in order to fit. I think it would be much better if they did fit back in without being disassembled. But overall the set has everything you need to play (including instructions), is functional, and pretty nice looking. Be careful not to over-tighten the mallet heads because the wood will split. I just stored it with the mallets assembled and sticking out of the bag a little. The balls are slightly lighter than standard regulation balls. You get 6 colors for the 6 players. I haven't had an issues and overall think it's a good cheaper set. I hope my review and photos have been helpful to you.
