I've been sewing since I was a teenager and now I'm in my forties mostly sewing for you two young daughters...I'm not a professional but certainly know how to sew and how to maintain my sewing machines. I received my new Singer CG590 and was a little disappointed with the all the plastic parts...but once I started sewing all my cares and concerns vanished. Over the last month I've sewn 2 dresses, 2 peasants skirts with yards and yards of fabric, pajamas and have done alterations. I did make a few adjustments to the machine tension and had to refer back to the instructions a few times but other wise the machine preformed flawlessly, the stitching was great and I personally found the machine easy to use. Plus I love that the CG590 is NOT a computer. I want to sew for my girls not be a computer programmer!!! Overall I'm very very happy with my purchase. My only complaint...I wish the motor was more quiet. August 2016 - I'm sad. We moved and I made the mistake of letting the movers move machine. Big mistake. I think it was crushed (causing the bobbin stick to get pushed into the machine and gears or moving to be destroyed). Up until the move the machine worked well 5 yesrs, stitching was even and smooth and yes the machine was a little loud but it maxee happy. I need commercial grade for short runs, special fabrics, and samples, and this machine has proven to be a superior replacement without spending much more than I did on my prior machine. It's a big deal for me when I replace something that works for me (previous machine) and am glad this model is working out. It is loud (not like they were years ago) and does vibrate a lot when running at high speed, but I use it in a studio where it's okay to make noise, and think if I can find a piece of foam/rubber to place under it it may reduce the vibrations. It's easy to thread and adjust. I was apprehensive after reading some reviews. No, it's not operated like my other machine but it was not difficult to learn, and like any new machine, one needs to learn how to make adjustments. Yes, I have tired machines and no matter how I hard I tried, I could not get used to how to thread it no less make adjustments, but this one is intuitive. Does it have the hole to insert an extension work table accessory?** A: NOPE, none of the newer machines have that capability. Singer quit putting those in the machines in the 70s. The only type of cabinet these machines will work in, is the ones with a lift type device. **Q: Can the feed system plate be removed for sewing leather? The metal serrated part marks the leather when I sew it.** A: Liam, this machine is an older model and isn't sold on Amazon. You should know this if you are seeing it listed somewhere else. I bought mine back in 2010. To answer your question, the machine offers a lever option for the user to drop the feed system. **Q: Can it sew on leather, imitation leather fabrics or heaveweight woven fabrics or denim?** A: NO - I had difficulty with this machine sewing sewing on anything i wouldn't reccomend it at all. my Janome hd3000 does very well on heavier fabrics (up to a point) you really need for the very heaviest an industrial mach. i have a very good Singer industrial. **Q: can this machine be used on a table top or do I need a sewing stand with a motor like industrial machines** A: DLXLDY stated it does not go through drapery cording…… all Heavy Duty Singers and especially this one can sew through 8 layers of new denim and more layers of old used jeans. I use a lot of drapery and cushion cording and it sews through it like butter. Perhaps you need to use a heavy duty or titanium needle if you are not already using one. I seldom have to sew through cording, as I usually use the cording that has a 1/2” of material (like a grosgrain ribbon or silk material) attached (called β€œ lip cord”) and you sew it to your seams which produces the perfect cording look. I use this Product or make my own. And these machines may fit in your sewing cabinet , but it’s a table top machine too!
