## Overview

The CURT 56196 tail light converter is a compact, splice-in wiring harness that converts a 2-wire vehicle system to a 3-wire trailer system, designed specifically for dinghy towing behind RVs. Featuring color-coded wires for easy installation and surface mount technology for efficient power and durability, it ensures reliable tail light operation without the need for heavy-duty flashers or battery connections.

## Description

When your vehicle does not readily provide an electrical connection for hooking up your trailer, CURT electrical converts offer the solution. Working tail lights on your trailer are absolutely essential any time you tow, and a converter provides an effective way to properly equip your vehicle for safe towing. A CURT electrical converter, much like our custom vehicle-to-trailer wiring harnesses, provides a trailer connector on your vehicle by splicing into the vehicle's electrical system. Electrical converters are designed to splice directly into the taillight wiring, rather than plugging into various sockets, giving them the nickname "taillight converters". Though it requires a little extra work compared to a custom wiring harness, a tail light converter offers a reliable, long-term connector solution. This CURT electrical converter is designed to convert a 2-wire system to a 3-wire system.

## Features

- DINGHY TOWING. This tail light converter converts the 2-wire vehicle electrical system to standard 3-wire trailer wiring and is intended for a vehicle being dinghy towed behind an RV or other large vehicle
- SPLICE-IN CONNECTION. This 2-to-3-wire taillight converter provides a dependable splice-in trailer wiring harness option for dinghy towing your vehicle. It can also be spliced to a 4-way flat socket for a convenient connection
- COLOR-CODED WIRES. To make installation faster and easier, this trailer wiring converter splices into your vehicle using color-coded wires (2.1 amps signal circuit, 5.0 amps taillight circuit)
- READY TO INSTALL. This trailer light converter comes ready to install on your vehicle. It has blunt-cut wires, and it requires no heavy-duty flashers or direct battery connection
- RELIABLE POWER. This RV trailer wiring converter is built with surface mount technology. This type of circuitry generates less heat, optimal light intensity and durable performance

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does anyone know the physical dimensions of the unit? I don’t need the package size.**
A: Old question but thought since that was such a lazy answer to say no...
1"x2.5"x3"

**Q: What is the wire gauge of the wire leads?**
A: I want to say 16 - 18 Guage roughly . I did my project a couple years ago and soldiered it in with no problems and worked perfectly . My only complaint if I had one would be the 2 sided tape they give you on the box itself isn't strong enough to hold it . I cleaned the surface I applied it to really good and it kept falling off , so I ended up making a bracket to hold it in place , but was no big deal .

**Q: I have a tekonsha voyager proportional brake controller. will this work with it? or.. will this work with electric trailer brakes (magnetic)?**
A: this item is made to convert a 4 wire light of a Trailer ( where one wire is connected to each bulb ) usually where the Brown wire is not paired to ether so this is for item that has 2 brown wires on it and you do not have a way to separate those blinkers this device will separate it for you

**Q: Has anyone successfully used this to wire a third brake light into a 2-wire system (just using the brake light output and not the turn signals)?**
A: yes I have. I used this to convert my Dune buggy to trailer lights when i am towing it.
I created a separate wire harness that i unplug the lites from the car and plug this device into it. my truck only has a 3 wire for trailer lights. this allows me to duplicate the Blinkers per side where as if i did not have it both blinkers would blink together. this worked wonderfully.

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Third brake light Ford
*by M***T on March 13, 2025*

Needed a way to get my topper’s brake light working. This did the trick and didn’t cause tow haul mode or Ford Bliss blind spot monitoring issues. Install is time consuming if you want todo it right with weather proof butt connectors, but it was worth it to have the third brake light working! Zipped tied it up on the frame and have extra turn signal wires if I ever want them. Also a unique feature is the third brake light will flash with hazards, which is a safety plus!!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Just what I needed
*by M***E on February 15, 2024*

I've been slowly putting together a harbor freight trailer. I had wired it knowing I wanted to add extra lights later. So I had short wires split going towards the back to add the lights later. I wanted lights that had reverse lights and separate turning lights, from the brake lights. I bought these (Agrieyes 6 Inch Oval LED Trailer Lights, Submersible Boat Trailer Light, with Brake, Turning Signal, Reverse Light, Backup Light, DOT Compliant https://a.co/d/inNU3JyBut using a 4 pin setup they wouldn't fully function the way I wanted. So I ended up buying this Curt item. I knew it wouldn't operate the trailer lights already installed the way I wanted it. So I ended up wiring this after the regular trailer lights using the wiring I had already ran for the extra lights I was adding. It worked perfect on the lights I added. I have separate brake, running lights, turn signal and reverse lights. I should mention that I had ran a reverse wire when I wired the trailer. It's awesome. So happy I took the time to do this. Is there an easier way to do this? Probably. But this worked out great for me.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works great
*by S***8 on September 3, 2023*

I'm using two of these now. One on the vehicle wired to accessory under tailgate lights with separate turn and brake lighting and one on a trailer with separate turn and brake lighting. Works great. Also, all my lighting is LED and I don't notice any descrempancies at this time. I say that because I know it's mainly used for regular filament lighting and many report delay or flashing between circuits. Either I haven't taken a close enough look or that is not an issue but everything seems to work fine. I cannot comment on longevity with having the first one for less than a year, but I do know the double sided mounting tape is terrible and falls off within minutes even after cleaning the mounting surface so it needs some form of better securement.
