A: no just do not coonect coolant hoses

A: It has a TXV value so no. 

Defrost option is only for freezers.

I put this in my 1973 International 1066 tractor and it works awesome. The thermostat went out but they replaced it without too many questions. It cools the tractor very well in the summer and if you know these tractors, they run very hot. And the heat can make it so hot you can't stay in the cab. In all this was perfect for me.
