Simply insert your hand up the bottom of the puppet. Your pinky and thumb can be inserted into the slots on the inside of the body to operate the hands. These puppets aren't recommended for large stage shows, but make very nice toy and budget puppets. Their high quality and attention to detail make them a very special gift. The puppet has a friendly face, cute yarn hair that waves in the wind and an expressive mouth. (I do wish that the mouth stayed CLOSED when in rest position; because with the puppet is not in use, the mouth gapes open and when you're using it, you have to consciously keep the mouth closed). You can move the neck a little, so the puppet can tilt it's head, but other than that, the neck doesn't have much movement. It IS a little slippery inside of the puppet, when trying to grip the inside of the puppets mouth...but it's fine. It's not a something that makes it unpleasurable to use, but it's a bit annoying when you first put it on.. Iit would have been nice to have a non-slippery fabric inside, but then again, that might have made it hard to put your hand in the puppet. The puppet is the perfect sizel for my hand and forearm and it's even comfortable enough for my 6 year old to use. My child immediately loved it. When we got them i was very surprised on how well they were made and also how life-like (in a cartoon kind of way) and how much detail went into them. They are very adorable. My son has yet to put them down and i keep waiting for him to put them down so i can play with them myself. These arent your everyday toys to be man-handled and tossed around, they arent made for that and probably wont hold up long to much abuse.
