They're discarded (to the DISCARD pile, not the hoard pile) as soon as you get one. The rulebook says: "ENDING YOUR TURN - Discard ONE card from your hand face down into the ‘Hoard Pile.’ It is now the next player’s turn. You do not have to discard IF you have no cards left in your hand." **Q: Can you combine more than one deck to have more people play?** A: Yes.
