They are not pop in batteries like in a flashlight. **Q: Instructions say let the lights charge for two days before turning on but then says you have to turn the lights on for them to charge. Contradictory!** A: You have to turn on to charge battery and it doesn’t charge in the off mode. After It does not charge on the off mode so after placing on ground where the sun will hit it during the day it took a good charge . As soon as sun set and it It gets a little dark it lights up automatic. I have had my tiki lights now all winter and now summer and every night they light up. So turn on after you pick a sunny location and leave them on. **Q: what is the purpose of batteries that you have to install? my lights have not been working well lately and I wonder if it's b/c of the battery I put.** A: They are the solar batteries...the solar panel charges them during the day. The right-angle adapters are a little weak, as I had 2 of 10 split on me when plugging the light into them. Fortunately, I only needed 8 for my fence posts, and the other 2 lights went into the ground. The lights pull off the screw-in adapters fairly easily, so I suppose you could put them away for the winter to prolong their life. I've only had them a couple of days, but so far I'm happy. If anything changes I will update my review.UPDATE 5/12/2023: After being outside for two years, these lights are still working great. I already have some solar lights on my pergola. These work great. not only are they attractive to look at when in daylight, they are stunning at night. They have a very warm glow and flicker to look more like a real flame and are a reddish yellowing color. Very lifelike. I am particularly impressed with the long battery life after charging. If these lights get direct sun for 6-8 hours a day they will run all night. My other solar lights on the pergola get sun the same amount of time but will run from about 8:30 at night till about 12:30 or maybe 1AM. These lights by contrast run until it gets light in the morning. I now have solar lights running all night long. I’m very happy with here lights. They also come with lances to stab them in the ground and anchors to mount on a vertices post or an outside wall.
