Review: Backpack for Rucking with Titan 20 lb. Ruck Plate - For those of you out there searching for an alternative to the $300 backpack + $90 ruck plate from the "big brand" - this is your answer! The 5.11 RUSH12 backpack perfectly fits the Titan 20 lb. ruck plate (found here on desertcart) in the back hydration pocket - so no need to worry about it flopping around in a backpack's main/large compartment. I just wrapped it up in an old t-shirt to keep it as snug as possible, and to keep the rough-ish finish of the plate from abrading the inside of the pack. The Titan 30 lb. ruck plate should also fit in the hydration pocket, as the internal dimensions of the pocket are 17" tall x 11" wide, and the plate is 14.5" tall x 8.75" wide. The Titan 45 lb. ruck plate is 15" tall x 9.5" wide, so that should be fine too. The backpack itself seems plenty "tough" for this job - 1050D nylon, wide/sturdy/comfortable straps, heavy duty zippers, etc. Tons of MOLLE all over it for pouches, water bottle holders, etc. if you're into that. It's also very nice that is has the attachment points for a 1.5" waist belt (sold separately from the pack), as that will really help keep your ruck in place and comfortable. I bought the Fire Force waist belt here on desertcart, as they have all the military/tacti-cool colors to (mostly) match all the colors in which the RUSH12 is available. There was ZERO chance I was paying $175-295 for a rucking pack from the "big brand" - 5.11 RUSH packs are very well reviewed, made of similarly tough materials, fit the Titan ruck plates perfectly, and are well-suited for "fitness" rucking. 5.11 RUSH packs are not, however, made in the USA, which is probably part of the reason why the price points are so different from the "big brand". The Titan ruck plates are a great product too - my review for those are on that product page. The main message is - for $152, you can be "all in" to get started rucking for fitness, and that includes the $12 waist belt mentioned above. To recap - $100 for the 5.11 RUSH12, $40 for a Titan 20 lb. plate, and $12 for the Fire Force waist belt (buy a 1.5" for the RUSH packs). This is compared to $260 to $390 just to get started with the same setup from the "big brand"! My first ruck with the setup last night was great - 3 miles at a rather quick pace, pack felt very stable and secure. My wife rucked 3 miles with it this morning as well, and no complaints.
Review: Far more than a mere day pack! - The 5.11 Rush12 has the design and capacity for far more than a half day excursion. In fact its compact size swallowed up the contents of my 72 hour bug out bag with no problems! The MOLLE/PALS loops on the sides along the main compartment zipper are not usable aside from tie-down or carabiner duty. Along the opposite seam they grow smaller towards the top, following the contour of the pack. I did however manage to use the second from the top loop (just below the compression strap) with a maximum width condor MOLLE tab with a little persuasion. The nicely padded shoulder straps also feature MOLLE/PALS loops, but the curved design did not allow the attachment of my Gerber LMF sheath. The sunglass pouch will fit larger framed glasses snugly. The hydration pocket does fit a 3L bladder, however snugly. I choose to use the larger bladders and simply not fill them to full capacity to give them some "squish" room. I have not popped a bladder in several years now. The hydration pocket appears more than adequate to accomodate this practice and even has a drainage hole with a large grommet should I ever pop another bladder. The loops on the bottom of the pack are spaced just how I like them to attach a poncho or the small size issue sleeping bag compression pouch. The front compartment of the pack has so many dividers and attachment points for anything imaginable, it's an admin guy's dream. The 4 larger pockets in the flap and just inside this compartment are sized just right for a steel or polymer M4 mags. To experiment, I attached a 1L bottle holder by Condor, a Gerber LMF II sheath, a small rip away EMT pouch by ATS, my strobe pouch by Emdom, a double pistol mag pouch by Condor, an Eagle M4 triple mag pouch and a 4 round 40mm ammo pouch by Tactical Tailor. I will never actually carry this bag with all of these pouches attached, but as you can see there is plenty of real estate. If I decided to fight out of this bag exclusively, I could do it! This is the little backpack that could! Before purchasing I went to the surplus store off base which happens to have the 5.11 line in stock. I inspected each bag and only needing a small versatile pack this proved perfect. I am so glad I made this purchase, I am constantly impressed with the thoughtful design and quality manufacturing of 5.11 products. I exclusively buy their polo shirts and own a few pairs of their pants to wear casually as well! As I write this I am also wearing one of their microfiber loose crew t-shirts which are cheaper and better made than Under Armor's products. If you need a "day pack" for any reason, strongly consider this pack. It's versatility, rugged construction and materials, thoughtful design and compactness set it apart from would be competitors.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I am looking for a light duty bag to carry on my motorcycle for work, or short trips, but can't decide between the 12 and 24, is the 24 overkill?**
A: I don't own the 24, but I do have the 12. I carry it to work almost every day whether I'm taking public transit or riding my bike. I typically carry a change of clothes, some snacks, a bottle of water, a sketchbook, pens and markers, a couple 8x10 canvas boards, a very small emergency tool kit (like a couple screw drivers,a multi tool and magnetic LED light), whatever book I'm currently reading, and some travel size toiletries to freshen up after my commute. And I Still have room left over for a 15" laptop and charger. Now I do pack it pretty tight but I can't imagine you'd need much more than that on a daily basis for a work bag. Plus you can hook a lot of stuff to the outside.

**Q: Would this bag be good for a GORUCK Light?**
A: I own a 5.11 Rush 12 and GORUCK Rucker. The Rucker is hands down a better pack for rucking with weight and for a challenge. I like the 5.11 but not for rucking 30+ lbs.

**Q: Any pocket made especially for concealed carry or something easy to attach to**
A: No it doesn't have a specific pouch for conceal carry as does the smaller single shoulder strap packs. This is a day backpack, there are mole loops on the outside to attach pouches to. Carrying concealed there is plenty of space inside. Quick release shoulder straps to drop the pack to get inside. Again no specific cc pouch.

**Q: Will this backpack hold a 15" MacBook Pro laptop?**
A: Yes, had plenty of room with my 13"

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good buy
*by B***T on May 3, 2020*

Excellent bag for EDC. A little “tactical” looking, but I dig it. Not as noticeable in the black version. Downgraded from a RUSH24 (also amazing), since I got a smaller laptop. This hits the sweet spot for EDC and size. I use it as an EDC/school backpack, and it's great for that purpose. Pros: -Well organized storage areas: there are two zip pockets on the inside along with a pouch with and elastic cinch. Outside there is a sunglass pocket on top, a small pocket on the top front, and a big useful admin pocket on the bottom. -Not as bulky as other EDC packs like the RUSH24 (but your experience may differ depending on your needs). -Bomb-proof construction. -Comfortable padding on the shoulder straps (though it needs a little break-in). -Customizable: the storage areas and MOLLE straps on the outside let you adapt this to whatever purpose you're going for. In my case, it's a school/EDC bag, but it could be used for a day hike, bug-out bag, get home bag, or "tactical diaper bag" if need be. -Camelback/water bladder compartment if you want to use it (I never do). Cons -No integrated water bottle storage area. -Doesn't sit up straight typically, and tends to lead forward or fall down if you're setting it on the floor. -Cinch straps on the side don't really do much. What I carry: -Laptop in case -Trauma kit in a Maxpedition Beefy organizer -Stethoscope case -Electronics peripherals case -Folders/notebooks if necessary -Small first aid kit -Personal hygiene items -Admin stuff like pens, pencils, knife, flashlight, multitool, lighters, mini notebooks, mini towel, etc. It works pretty well to fit all the stuff that I need. If you're in the market for an EDC bag like this I suggest reading the reviews, looking at pictures of other people's set-ups and determining what you're going to carry before you make a decision. Just do some research. There are bags with little organization that are nothing more than a rucksack, and bags with a lot of partitions and specialized slots for stuff. This one falls somewhere in between. If you're looking to store a 15" laptop, while it will technically fit in here, it's going to be stretching the limits of capacity, and it won't be super easy to get in and out.
