During installation you have to realize that you are pushing the sides of the gate together as you are screwing the tension knobs tighter on each side. This action causes the gate opening to get smaller, and ultimately you want it so small that the two sides of the gate, where the latch is, almost meet entirely. What you'll notice is there's little grooves on each side of the gate where you lock it. These little grooves should be close enough when you flip the latch down so that they fit together and lock. This is what prevents your child from just figuring out how to lift the gate up without having to press the two buttons and lift the lever! Ultimately when we installed this gate, we realized we needed to tighten the tension knobs to the point where the two sides of the locking mechanism amost meet entirely - no joke, there should only be about 1/16 or 1/8 of an inch between them, then you'll engage the little groves when you flip the latch down and your little one won't be able to lift it up. The one bad thing about this gate is the bar across the bottom. I think it would be OK in a doorway, but we are using it on the bottom step of a stairway and I've noticed that my toddler (currently 19 months and walking down the stairs with assistance) has no choice but to step on it at the bottom of the stairs. Of course we have this same problem, and when you step on that last step without shoes, it hurts! Plus ultimately my concern is that once my son is old enough to walk down the stairs on his own, he may trip over the bar (we have to leave the gate up for our child who will arrive in February). If you do choose to use this gate on your stairs, note that if you are installing it on one of the spindles, you can use the tension knobs that come with it on the bottom, but will likely need to buy one set of the 'Y' tension knobs that are sold separately (and work very well). Long story short - take a look at your spindles before ordering. If they're square at the bottom, you'll just need 1 set of 'Y' tension rods. They take a little time to install and the instructions aren't the greatest, but it's well worth the effort - the gate installatio kids are extremely study and work very well with the Angle Mount Gate (and you can purchase the angle mount gate even if you are installing on a straight stairway). Good luck! ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Good gate, but listing is unclear/wrong about extension size included *by A***I on Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2020* The gate is great but the information listed here on Amazon is inaccurate, making it very frustrating to figure out what you need- so I’ll clarify for you! In this Amazon listing, the photo of the box should be higher quality so you can actually read how large it can extend to, and there is a chart that says how many extension bars are needed for various opening widths which says “included with gate” for extending up to 47.5 inches and this is incorrect.What you get with the gate is the gate itself and 2 extension bars, meaning with what you get in THIS box you will be able to fit the gate to an opening 29”-37” wide. It’s basically a 29” gate (once you include the minimum size of the spindles on both sides) + 2x extension bars which are each about 2.75” (sum 5.5”) + you can extend the spindles on both sides up to 1.75” (sum 3.5”) = just over 37”.On the box, this product says “Optional extensions are available for wider openings to 47.5 inches”, meaning extensions are SOLD SEPARATELY if you need to fit an opening that’s bigger than 37” and up to 47.5”.I found a 5.5” extension on Amazon (that says it fits this G1100 gate), and will attempt to use 1 or 2 of those with some combination of what’s included in this box to fit my opening which is 40.5” on the bottom and 42” on the top. Wish me luck!Be sure to measure the height to be sure you don’t have obstructions at the height where the spindles need to go at the top.Otherwise, auto close is good especially when you’re carrying baby, ability to keep it open (by opening more than 90 degrees) is convenient too. Looks as “nice” as it could look. Swings both ways. I didn't want anything permanent, so we went with a pressure mounted, swing-open gate, and the Kidco has mostly met expectations.The overall quality is generally good. The product is white powder coat steel and seems fairly rugged. Only real quality issue I can see is that the latch mechanism is mostly plastic, and it looks like over time, it would be the first thing to go. There are a few unfinished spots and I do worry that the metal parts will eventually oxidize or rust, but these are minor concerns.Installation took maybe ten minutes. The instruction manual is fairly poor, but it's really pretty simple to install. To a good degree, the complexity of the install depends on how wide an opening you need to fit the gate into. I have a 32" doorway, and I found that this is just about the limits of the supplied bolts without using extensions. Yes, if you have a wider opening, there are extensions supplied, but using them (or knowing if you need to) seems like it leads to an ugly install with the effect of a small gate dangling in a large opening. Still, once installed, it seems strong (strong enough to keep our dog from pushing it open).Once installed, operation is simple: you just lift the handle and swing open the gate.
