The Pro has a HDMI but the thinner Air requires an adapter. Having searched for one that was cheapest while having a good review, I ended up with this product.I think you are reading this because you are in the same boat.I bought it and have absolutely no regrets. It works right out of the box and my laptop does the rest to connect it. Communication errors? Digital vs. analog? Thunderbolt vs. mini-display? But I am happy to say that this adapter has been nothing but flawless for me. While I love my MacBook Pro, I don't love that Apple doesn't provide an HDMI port for display out on their laptops. That being said, this adapter does the trick. Not only is the cable a good length, but you can tell it's a good quality build. With my current setup (2012 MBP), it does indeed transfer both video and audio. This is definitely a hand adapter for the price! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great, but instructions, please. *by A***L on Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2016* Wanted to connect my 2015 Imac to a big Samsung flatscreen to watch EyeTV recordings, mostly opera. Bought this, wired it up, but got "no signal" in Source on TV from the HDMI input.Gloom and despair. Discovered, though, by trial and error that the TV end of the HDMI cable needs to be plugged in with the TV OFF, then the TV turned on. Works like a charm, now. I don't know the difference between active and passive cables, but when it started to work, it also "optimized the Mac screen for Samsung",(poor resolution) and I had to go into Displays in Preferences and select Optimize for Mac Screen, which gave me back my beautiful Retina Display picture. That didn't seem to affect the gorgeous picture being mirrored on the TV.
