Each light has a small piece of plastic that keeps the battery from touching the wires to the bulb. I've just opened ALL 30. Some of them (three, out of thirty, for me) I REALLY had to twist on before it would light up.I did notice that with some, even if the plastic piece was in, the wire still managed to touch the batteries. In light of that (ha ha), I swapped the batteries out- the batteries (in this case, anyway) were all good, I guess the LED's just dead.The o-rings look solid, and I only plopped one in some water, but no sparks or fizz-outs.To those crying 'defective', or concerned that your newly bought ones are:1) make sure you take the plastic barrier out (duh).2) twist it on TIGHT (you can more easily test this if you take the LED part out of the plastic head and just press it to the batteries)3) swap out batteries. Maybe the plastic slipped and the light was on before it even left the warehouse. They're only supposed to have 12 hours of life.now, Pros:These have two settings! Two batteries, as it comes, are bright. I mean really bright. Don't-look-directly-at-them bright. The good news is that you can take a battery out and the LED will still turn on, but much dimmer.Cons:It's still not a soft glow-y look like in the picture though- it's a very direct light source. Doesn't look all that great sitting in a transparent glass votive, but behind frosted or translucent glass, in water beads, heavy tulle, crepe paper- there are all sorts of ways to force the light to diffuse before it leaves your decoration.They're also a bit smaller than I expected- 1.25" (3cm) across. The size looks awkward in a votive. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Subtle little light *by D***S on Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2014* I bought these for a different purpose than for a wedding or such. Firstly, they are bright little lights, but do not let the product photo fool you. They're not as bright as the picture portrays, but do give off a nice warm little glow. Following the directions for these guys is key since you have to make sure the batteries are making connection to the positive/negative ends. If you think you received a dud, there is a way to fix that by bending the prongs down so it is getting a full connection. Otherwise, these are great little accents. Easy to use and store. I put them as a little accent in my fountain, but due to the brightness, it just gives a bit of a glow which is okay. Overall, I'm happy with them and for the price you can't beat that with them being submersible. The reason for the 4 stars is that I expected them to be a bit more bright-- but they're still cute little things to use as an accent in a decorative jar, vase or even lining the steps of a swimming pool at night. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The food and service were goodand the beer selection was excellent.
