Review: Did not expect such a good result - This is an amazingly useful small item most people who are careful and confident about self "nursing" and care should have. As the prduct itself indicates this is basically a magnifier with a led light. However, it really is very useful. My husband had an ear wax build up in the past and was told to buy over the counter remedies (clean up system/ear drop and pump) and do it at home. Yes we/I did it in the past but just after getting 0.5 cm diameter piece out we thought that that must be it. When I got the otoscope two weeks ago I understood that without looking into the ear canal you can never know what is happening inside. Thanks to this so reasonably priced otoscope we toook time in doing the job gradually, putting one- or two drops of glycerin (baby oil is also fine) in the course of couple of days, softening the build up then after three times of careful and cautious cleaning with he help of the over the counter systems he is compleletly free of the build up. I would never understand what we were doing and most probably would not succseed in comptleting the clean up if I could not see what was inside. It was scary, but seeing inside helped a lot. One needs to pull the ear quite a bit to help the ear canal to get more of a straight line, otherwise it is very easy to use.If you are applying on your children they may feel like they are punished through pulling of ear!!! It looks funny to pull the ear. If you are applying its reuseable head make sure that you really wash them each time as recommended in order to avoid introducing bacteria. I am recommending it very strongly for those who might need it but also remind us all that the ease with which one can use it should not blind one that afterall one is engaging in a small medical examination and should also show the basic care as the health professionals take. Otherwise such self usable things may turn out to be dangerous. I don't think you can use an otoscope on yourself. Never tried. I've used it on my husband, my 2 year old and my 10 month old. It works fine with my husband and 2 year old because they are able to sit still long enough for me to see the eardrum. My baby is too wiggly and I haven't been able to really see her eardrum. The doctor showed me how to use it, you have to pull the ear back to really see the eardrum. This is not nearly as bright as the one the doctor has, but it works for my purposes. I use it to see if the ear is slightly irritated/red so I know if I should be bringing my son to the doctor for an ear infection. It's very difficult to know if he has one through his actions/mood etc. Hope this helps. **Q: does this come with replacement plastic ends that enter the ear or are they purchased seperately** A: Yes, this came with about three replacement plastic ends (disposable specula) and I also purchased a package of disposable speculas separately. **Q: will it work to check a dogs ear?** A: Yes, we bought it especially for our two W. Highland Terriers. The LED light is especially good feature of this model. **Q: Do the standard exam room ear specula fit onto this? or do I have to buy the Dr. Mom ones? I need an otoscope that fits the standard ones** A: Depends on what 'standard ones' are for you. Our standard ones DO NOT FIT this stethoscope, (these are the ones that have a twist-lock on them and fit standard Welch Allen scopes and their old-school wall-mounted scopes.). I purchased it with hope to be able to diagnose baby's ear infections at home. Saves a trip to the doctor's if nothing is brewing in the little ears! The jury is still out if I will be able to do it: as the product brochure/info states it, it takes practice to be able to see the eardrum and then tell healthy one from infected one. They do provide nice guide and even picture of what healthy vs infected drums look like. In the meantime, the otoscope is great for looking into little one's nose to spot any boogers that need to be removed! One can argue that a simple flashlight can be used for the same purpose, but then the light shines all over babies face and the eyes really irritating them!
