    Like the lock mechanism

*by A***. on February 14, 2013*

I've tended to wear slip-on shoes day-to-day, but have found enough situations where they're too loose, especially after they're broken in. So I decided to get a pair of laced shoes, but in keeping with the laziness of slip-ons, I decided to try using these Nathan Velocity bungee laces instead. I also own a pair of Lock Laces on an athletic shoe and has bungee laces so I can quickly change to go to the gym.I found it was a bit more difficult to thread the laces through the lock mechanism on the Nathan Velocity laces. One side went through easily but the second got hung up for a bit. I did manage to get it through, and you'd only have to do that once. But so far, I like the lock mechanism on the Velocity laces better. The way it works is that there is a toothed wheel which slides forward and back. In one position, the wheel holds the laces against the sides of the lock, while in the other, the laces are loose so they are very easy to adjust. What I like about this is that when you slide the wheel, it stays in its position; and it's a simpler mechanism with moving parts. In contrast, the Lock Laces have a pair of spring-loaded buttons, so you have to keep the buttons held down if you want to adjust the tightness of the laces. Because the lock wheel stays in its position, I find it more convenient to adjust the laces, or to take the shoes on and off if I have them laced up tighter. However, you probably won't need to adjust the laces much after they've been set up to your liking (after a few wearings of the shoes). I will comment that the Velocity laces aren't on my athletic shoes, so I haven't seen whether the lock mechanism would slip if stressed much more aggressively. But so far, so good.I've seen some comments about rethreading the laces after they've been cut (and frayed) at the ends to shorten them to a more convenient length. It would be nice if all of these manufacturers of bungee laces would provide some better solution for this in case you want to transfer these laces to another set of shoes. (Of course, they're thinking that you should just go buy another pair from them...) I did actually transfer the Lock Laces to a new better pair of athletic shoes, and the fraying was considerable at the cut ends. That issue would likely be worse with the Nathan Velocity laces because of the relative difficulty of threading them through the lock mechanism. Right now I'm experimenting with heat shrink tubing, normally used on bare wires in electrical/electronics work, to bind up the cut ends so they don't fray. Hopefully that will hold up too and will make it much easier to rethread if I should ever transfer these laces to another set of shoes.

    Decent speed laces

*by S***E on February 12, 2012*

As far as speed laces go, these are good for ease of use and durability. However, I had to thread them into the locking mechanism and it wasn't the easiest thing to do. I ended up using a skinny pen to help me out.The price on these was decent and as long as they don't get more expensive I will probably still buy them occasionally, though I much prefer lock-laces for their colors, ease of lacing, and threading.I have no idea how these would hold up to any kind of actual running, as we only use them to keep my son from breaking the back of his shoes. With these he actually "unties" them, instead of always leaving them tied and trying to shove his foot in.

    Long Enough...Finally!

*by T***D on January 6, 2014*

I am an Occupational Therapist working in home care. I frequently have a need for elastic laces for my geriatric patients, but often find that the ones typically available are MUCH too short. These work well with most men's shoes and appear to be of good quality. The only criticism I have is that the locks are too hard to figure out and take too much time to thread. Most of my patients would give up trying to use them way before I did, and then assume that the laces were a bust altogether. Will continue to buy, but won't be using locks.
