**Q: Is there a way to true this with the black edge if for some reason it is out of square?**
A: Loosen screws, stand upright so both the square and the edge are on the flat surface. Tighten screws.

As a parallel scribing guide, it's convenient, easy to use and true enough for it's intended purpose. Not finishing the edges however, limits it's use as a square because the lines drawn are so jagged; my pencil even catches on the measurement marks.
