These then stick to the banister so rips paint off when adjusting the position (the whole point of getting this was so I didn't damage the banister). Advertised as universal but did not work on my banister so false advertising. My square bannister measurws 45cm all round.** A: It will fit. My bannister measures 48cm all round and is square and it fits. There wasn’t a lot of slack left on the cords though so it was tricky to pull them tight - I ended up having to grip each end with a pair of pliers and use those to pull them tight as there wasn’t enough slack left to get a solid hold with fingers alone. But i got it on, it is rock solid, and I didn’t have to drill into our 120 year old staircase!! **Q: How wide is this, how much narrower will it make the opening for the stairgate?** A: It will narrow the opening by about 23mm in total. You have the wood which is 20mm but also a metal bracket that tucks behind the wood to pull and hold the straps tight. That adds 2-3mm. **Q: Would this work on a round metal railing as thick as a coke can?** A: I think so. Better off just drilling into the banister in my opinion and then fill and paint the holes once the gate is no longer needed. ### ⭐ Over complicated and ultimately useless *by K***Y on 8 May 2021* I was amazed at how complicated this was to put together, for what is basically a piece of wood that you strap to a post. Instructions are very poor, and the process of assembling and fitting it is extremely fiddly. Not only that, despite being advertised as a universal staircase adaptor, it will only safely fit a post of very specific measurements with a bannister at a certain height and it is not adjustable. In the ended up having to throw it away and drill into the post anyway.
