I'd guess it stays very hot for maybe ~90 seconds, then hot for another ~2 minutes, and then warm for another ~8 minutes. Very disappointing. I haven't tried it in the freezer. **Q: Why does it smell like amonia fresh out of the bag?** A: I don't think it has an amonia smell, It has a oder of some kind but nothing offense. It certainly helped my sore elbow. **Q: How long should I freeze this ice sleeve before using?** A: No matter how long you freeze it, it won't stay cold for more than 10 minutes. With this, you just simply slide it on! As far as coldness, it gets pretty cold to the point where there's a slight numbness to the area which I don't mind because it fades away in a couple of minutes. I get approximately 15 minutes of coldness with the sleeve before the coldness dies down. I would like it to last longer but I guess it would suffice to keep some swelling down after a hard run. As far as compression, it's adequate. I don't need this product to really compress my legs because I own separate compression sleeves to do that. A little tip is to freeze the sleeve for more than the recommended time. In that way you get the most coldness out of the sleeves. This product was effective that I bought two pairs for my shins and knees. My recovery time too has been cut short and I feel less sore (if even) the next day.
