    Set-UP not so 1,2,3

*by B***1 on Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2014*

Struggling with Netflix streaming and buffering through my Blue Ray Player using wireless internet coming from my router at the other end of the house, I decided to try these after reading all the positive reviews and the claim of 1,2,3 setup. Well that 1,2,3 setup was not to be. I could not get the 2 units to "sync" after following the simple directions in the booklet that came with the package. I tried several times to no avail. When I thought that maybe I got some synching, I tried to plug one unit into my blue ray player then went to the wired setup on the player and had it search for a connection. The good news was - I had Ethernet connection coming in from my electrical outlet across 2 different breakers. The bad news - there was no internet data coming over from the router - no IP address, no DNS server, etc.Called TRENDnet support number listed on the booklet. Waited on hold for at least 20 minutes - not too bad with these tech companies. They told me that I had to load the CD that came with the adapter set - this was NO WHERE in the instructions and several people posted that they specifically did not need to use the CD for synching. I kept the support person on the line as he walked me through what to do. It was much more involved having to connect one into my desktop computer and the other into the router - going into the software are re-naming them so they could "talk to each other". Again - not a word about this process in the instruction booklet. Long story short - after doing what tech support said to do, I plugged one into my blue ray player and there it was - wired connection settings all passed. I immediately tried to load Netflix and it worked once I reset my password.I watched one Netflix show for 30 minutes and this is what I can tell you at this time:Did Netflix load any faster - No, it seemed to take just as long for my Netflix menu to come up as it did with wireless.Once the program was loaded - I did not have any "buffering issues" - it loaded quickly and began to play. Did not have any buffering issues throughout the 30 minute period.Quality of the high definition video - MUCH BETTER than what came over my wireless settings. On wireless the video quality would fluctuate between high definition and graininess - I did not see any of that during the entire 30 minutes - clear high def.So my verdict is 3 stars mostly because of the setup but this rating could improve as I continue to watch the streamed content over time. Will update this review at a later time

    Solid Powerline Adapter Kit

*by S***D on Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2014*

For my purpose of getting a high-speed connection for internet access from my cable router downstairs to my computer, this has worked well and isn't a limiting factor on bandwidth (I can get 60-75 Mbps UL/DL, limited by my FIOS service I pay for). Wifi wasn't cutting it as the signal in the basement was weak and only provided about 10 Mbps.I understand powerline networks to be finicky, where configuration of your electrical circuits in your house can make a big difference. For me, I have a new house with code-compliant wiring, and I installed the two adapters on the same vertical wall (one directly downstairs from the other). While I haven't verified it, they may be running through the same breaker.I have read several of the negative reviews on this unit and have an important point to make. Disregard (throw out) the paper manual that came with the adapter kit as it is misleading and devoid of detail. It confused me and I had several of the issues pointed out in some of the reviews regarding on-again/off-again connection problems after first installing. Download the latest PDF User's Guide from the manufacturer's support website (for convenience, http://www.trendnet.com/support/supportdetail.asp?prod=155_TPL-408E2K, although I can't guarantee that link will work forever). In a nutshell, to install properly1) connect the adapter that will be closest to the router first (no need to press the Sync button, two LEDs should go solid),2) connect ethernet cable from your router to the first adapter (third LED should start blinking),3) connect second adapter for remote connection (again no need to press Sync),4) connect ethernet cable from second adapter to your computer,5) install Utility software either from CD or website, making sure WinPcap driver load at boot time is checked,6) restart computer and verify connection is workingI also chose to Set VLAN Tags (in Utility, go to Advanced) and Set TOS Bits by clicking each button and waiting a few seconds for the adapters to reset. While I'm not an ethernet expert, these may improve the quality of service (dealing with identification and prioritization of packets using IP over virtual LANs) of your connection, although I'm not sure if these are preset out of the box. These may make more of a difference if you're using your powerline connection for more than just internet (e.g. VOIP, etc). The User's Guide gives you more details about securing your network (especially if you're in an apt building) and associating adapters (either using the Sync button or the Utility).Since this adapter kit has perfectly met my expectations (and I don't need gigabit speeds to fully make use of my internet connection), I give it 5 stars.

    Solved my problems!

*by A***Y on Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2015*

I have a desktop computer in our 2nd bedroom. House was built in 1977 so we depend on WiFi. Tried several WiFi adapters and antenna combinations over last three years, but could never get a reliable signal to this spot in the house. Some years ago I tried power line networking (in a prior house), as that place had concrete and gypsum EVERYWHERE and forget WiFi, even cell phones were dead in much of it! The power line networking devices were extremely expensive, touchy, and not reliable enough to use. This Trendnet model came highly reviewed, and was cheap. I did not want to risk a lot of money on something that was not going to work. THESE DO WORK!! I could not believe how fast I was up and running. Two minutes at most and I was online! Speed is marginal at 60Mbps, but both plugs are as far from the load center as you can get, so it is a worst case scenario setup. It does match the speed of my internet provider, so Comcast is really the bottleneck (as usual...). Still need to conduct more tests of internal lan speed to get a true test of throughput.Bottom line is they work, and are very easy and inexpensive! They do not block other outlet, which is nice and these are not bulky. They are surprisingly flush. Speed is fast enough that you would only see a slowdown on internal traffic such as large file transfers (vs cat5/6 wired). They have Gigabit ports, which is a must have! Also removes devices from WiFi so takes the pressure off the wireless if you have a lot of devices like we do. I was considering fishing cat 6 through my walls, but with this product there is now no need to do so which is such a relief! I plan to buy a few more to get crib cams off the WiFi and move a networked printer. If you have a problem like mine to solve, these are thankfully the answer!
