It comes with flash cards with the pattern and they are big enough to place the tiles on to create the image. He also can use the tiles alone to repeat the pattern on his own. The level of difficulty is also listed on the card. Cards and tiles came with a holding bag when not in use. Cards seem like they will be pretty durable, as they are heavy stock, but not laminated.
