The chime setting is instant set, and both work for me. My main complaint is that the magnet wire - as well as a jumper wire traversing the back of the unit - both emanate from the upper keyhole used to hang the unit! There are wires where you are supposed to slide a screw head - seriously dumb. I am using double sided foam tape instead, but again, the wire that runs from top to bottom outside of the unit makes tape placement tricky and tape area smaller. Also, slide switch has OFF in center, with chime at bottom and alarm at top. Preferable would have been OFF/CHIME/ALARM in that order so you aren't fiddling with finding center detent when visitors arrive at night or first thing in the morning. Minor quibble though. The idiotic placement of the wires cost this unit two stars. The chime isn't exactly "pleasant" as described, it is a very electronic sounding two-tone that repeats three times, and the alarm is "as advertised", very loud - louder than your smoke alarm, by far.
