Just big enough lip to keep crayons and pencils from falling off. We also did water activities on it and the spillage never went off the tray. **Q: What are inside dimensions? will it hold a 9 x 12 piece of construction paper?** A: The trays have a soft surface, and are useful for crafts, as well as serving a meal.
