It's as esata or USB housing for four drives. Mine is USB connected to a synology NAS box and exposes each of the four drives inside as a separate device to the synology nas head which then makes those available on the network via smb, nfs, etc. am pretty sure this box will work when USB connected to OS X. I have used other devices with the same innards as this one with OS X successfully. This box may also concatenate drives (make four 2 tb drives look like 1 8 tab drive) but I wouldn't recommend using that feature; lose one of the four drives and all your data is lost. **Q: support only 3.5" hard disk? any adapter for 2.5" hard disk?** A: even with a 2.5" adapter it won't work cause the ports inside the unit are positioned for 3.5" drives **Q: The Top description says 4TB capacity. The lower desrciption says 3TB capacity per drive. Which is true?** A: I am running 2 Seagate 8TB drives, a Seagate 5TB, and a 3TB Mediamax drive, just fine. I think the key is GPT partition tables and 64bit OS, sky's the limit (using xubuntu here.) **Q: do the drives spin down when not in use and connected to PC via USB?** A: USB Drives don't have the capability to sleep, unless the unit turns itself off, it would be impossible to send the hardware signal to sleep the drive.
