Caught a brown rat the first night. *by D***S on September 12, 2020* I had been battling rats eating my rippening and green tomatoes. Tried netting, etc. Thought it might be a raccoon, but early morning inspections spotted something smaller. Ordered one of the Rockbird mouse traps and caught a brown rat the first night. I did the same modifications to hold the dual handles away from the cage that others mentioned. Put a few pieces of dog food in the "receiving" areas and a chewable dog treat on the "trigger wire". Hope to get the accomplice tonight. Note that the vendor recommends cleaning the cage in between captures. The rat in the photo has a body about 6-7 inches long, so this works well for rodents.Update after 3 weeks. I caught 2 brown rats and 2 juvenile opossums in the first week. There was one more rat that I had spied in my night time inspections, but it was avoiding the trap. The rats are notorious for marking dangers for their "kin". I had washed the trap with hot water (60C soapy water), but didn't catch the little vermin. Finally layered under the trap with freshly cut grass and caught the last one. Recommend that you get some twine to "tether" the retaining wire for the release door. It will make it easier to open the release door AND you won't lose the springy retaining wire when you are releasing your prisoner. I nearly lost mine but was able to find it. The manufacturer might consider this as a future modification. Everything else works GREAT. Very satisfied. ### ⭐ This trap killed a young possum. No Cover from heat or sun. *by S***S on June 13, 2020* I'm going to be haunted by this trap forever. I got it to live trap the rats and get rid of them in a nearby riverwash with lots of wild life. I hate the thought of killing or injuring animals. I checked the trap the first night. Somone stole the bacon, but no one in it. The second day I didn't check it till late afternoon. I was horrified to find a dead young possom laying in it with his teeth clenched on the bars. It was then that I realized that I had placed it in a sunny area and while there was plenty of fresh fruit in the trap, there is NO COVER FROM HEAT/SUN. It was about 95 today. I feel awful. This trap needs an overhead cover and heat/cold advisories to warn those who are as stupid as me to think that for sure an animal woudl be ok in a trap for less than a day. UGH! Returning. ### ⭐⭐⭐ They did not get out *by A***N on June 8, 2022* I used to use the flat rectangle traps that can catch several and have a clear plastic window. I like them. Then the mice learned to just stroll out after a happy buffet.So I got another, a wire rectangular tube with no easy way to release the mice. Well that was not a problem. First the mice stole entire bottle lids of peanut butter, lid included. Then I figured out how to set those so the trap would catch them, finally, by putting the trigger and the bait right on edges............ and found out that while the closing was loud they could squeeze right out.This trap though, well when I tore through a cabinet and manually caught the mice in an empty yogurt container (yes, multiple times) after they escaped the others, I put them in this product/trap. I am not walking half a mile into the woods at 2am.In this trap they remained until morning when I released them.HOWEVER, not once has a mouse gone in voluntarily. 2. The flap door... the cat almost let the mouse out once. 3. the mesh bottom means poop still gets everywhere. 4. This trap is freaking huge. Way too big for a field mouse.
