Is j-trap standard dimensions?** A: It looks like the j-trap in this kit has a threaded outlet, not a captive nut. Check whether your existing j-trap has a captive nut that mates with threads on the inlet end of the metal drain elbow. If so, I think you should find a j-trap that has a captive nut, so it can mate with the elbow's threads. Alternatively, you might be able to use this kit if you also replace the metal elbow with the corresponding piece in this kit (and possibly also replace the horizontal metal drain pipe section to which the outlet end of the metal elbow is attached). If you buy a metal j-trap (with a captive nut) look for one that has a thick gauge. The thicker the metal, the longer it will last. The smaller the gauge number, the thicker. 20 gauge is thicker than 22 gauge, etc. You might be able to find 17 gauge, although that's more common for 1-1/2" (kitchen) traps than for 1-1/4" (bathroom) traps. It's a shame this kit wasn't designed with pvc j-trap that has a captive nut, and threads on the end of the pvc arm to which the captive nut would mate. That design would match the old plumbing standard and make the kit more flexible. But perhaps it's not possible to engineer a captive nut using pvc. Metal can be reshaped. With a metal j-trap, the manufacturer can slide the captive nut on at one end of the j-trap and then reshape (flare) that end to its final shape that has an outer diameter larger than the nut's inner diameter, which makes the nut non-removable ("captive" or "captured"). But pvc presumably can't be reshaped, and gluing on a collar at the end of the pvc j-trap (after sliding the nut onto the trap) would add an extra manufacturing step.
