Mixed feelings on quality control and durability of material versus a good night's sleep

*by T***Y on Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2017*

I have to say that I have mixed feelings on this cot. This cot is similar to the "Therm-a-Rest LuxuryLite UltraLite Cot" but at around a 1/3 the price ...but I still expect reasonable durability and better than pad only sleeping.Prior to purchasing, I had compared similar cots and watched a couple of videos on assembly due to the issues that other people had with this type of cot. Be sure to check that each pole is fully inserted into the notched holes of end rings (as they can slip out easily during assembly. [If you closely compare the seller images (as of 1/12/2017) of this cot to that of the Therm-a-Rest version, you will notice that where the 2 poles are added to each ring (for the extra support) that the Therm-a-Rest one has the ends of both poles firmly secured in place to the outer edge of the rings while the Yahill's ground facing poles are not.]I own 2 of these cots ...through 2 different Lightning Deals. First one was pre-Thanksgiving. The second one was the week before Christmas. These are intended to be used mainly at Scout camp outs with my son.The first cot was well constructed and test assembled (and laid on) at home with no issues. I used it at an indoor scout event back in November with no problems. I had a surprising good nights sleep on it considering I switch between back and side sleeping. It held up well. No noticeable wear and tear. [Side note, I did use an "ALPS Mountaineering Lightweight Series Self-Inflating Air Pad" on top of it with a mummy sleeping bag & liner.]Given the better than expected sleep and its durability for an average height adult weighing around 160 lbs, I ordered a second one.Unfortunately, I ran into 3 issues dealing with the 2nd cot.The first issue was a defect in the bed cloth. The cot bed cloth where both side poles would be inserted were sewn shut. Being a quality control issue, I emailed the seller through Amazon in the evening about it (and getting a possible replacement). By the morning, they had responded and offered to provide a partial credit in the amount of the replacement bed cloth. I have to give them kudos on the quick customer support in getting this resolved. I took advantage of the credit and ordered the replacement cloth (...which was received quickly thru Amazon Prime). Now for the second issue, the replacement bed cloth for the cot had the same issue with the ends being sewn (where the side poles would be inserted). Luckily, the ends were not as 'tightly' sewn so this time I basically cut through the incorrect stitching to open up the ends (...rather than try to get another replacement). As for the third issue, it is the quality of the crossbars. Once assembled at home, my son (~100 lbs & ~ 5 ft) tried it carefully. He liked it. I helped him disassemble it. Afterwards I saw that several crossbars had significantly noticeable bends in them ...while others had some level of bend. I had used the same method and amount of force to take it apart that I used on the first cot that I own, but the crossbars of the 2nd cot did show significant bends in comparison from less than 2 minutes of use. Might have been the disassembling that caused it. In any case, given its intended use, I believe that it should be a little more rugged so that you shouldn't need to be so extremely careful to use it. The other possibility is just that the quality of the metal used wasn't great ...or consistent... considering I didn't have any issues with the first cot.I sent another email to the seller through Amazon and in less than 12 hours had a similar quick response with providing a credit for the replacement part to be ordered (for a "4 piece support rods" set ...note, this parts set does not replace all the "crossbars" included with the cot).Overall, I will have to wait and see how much of a quality / durable product this is (given the price paid) ...and I am hoping that it will be positive ...but I can't honestly say at this point. But from a customer service point of view, I can say that I am impressed with their prompt responses to try to get this resolved. Quality control is the big question here ...and hopefully my earlier feedback to them will help them resolve it.UPDATE...After sending a copy of the poles picture in this review to the seller (Yahill), they responded that they are working on a new & improved (...and little more expensive...) cot design that should be available on Amazon in about 2 months...for those that may be interested.[UPDATE .. 2019-02-11] Have had the chance to use the cot(s) on multiple occasions. No problems using them ...or putting and take apart (with reasonable care). Actually used one for several weeks straight ...while some work was being done in the bedroom. Note, I do usually use an Alps Mountaineering air mattress on top this to help with the comfort. Granted, this setup is not a full comfort substitute for a normal bed. For this reason, bumping up rating another star to 4.

I purchased the promoted (newer version) of the cot. After inserting poles, assemble a leg and let it rest on the far side and snap into place as the cot hangs. Simple and easy. No snapping into holes or threading poles into those tiny hoops. Nice feet on the legs do not damage what they rest on. Light weight and packs small. The pillow has a thin pad inside. You stuff the sack of your tent, the cot, or clothing into it so you have a real pillow to sleep on. Back to the cot....I'm 210lbs. I sleep on my side. There is about 2" left between the cot and ground once I settle down. You do not feel anything against you once you lay down. It is like sleeping on a hammock that is flat, if that makes sense. The ONLY thing I would change about the new design is to have the legs slightly spread apart further. Why? Because when I lay down, my head is past the last leg and feels the lack of support of the closer legs. Not a huge deal, but I have to stuff more into the pillow to hold my head (remember, side sleeper). Sleeping on my back, was better as far as the cot comfort was concerned but just didn't fit my style.More detail on my assembly style. The legs have a small C shape at each end to cradle the poles that are threaded into the cot fabric. I inserted the poles into the cot. I hold one edge with the sleeping side next to me. I dangle a leg and shake it until it assembles itself. I had to help two of them, the rest just popped into place. Let one end of the leg hang down to the opening in the cot fabric on the bottom side. Once it it in place, put a small(subjective) amount of pressure to snap the top portion into place. Repeat for each leg. Much easier than the model with the rings. Be SURE that the leg is completely assembled before putting the pressure to put into place or you will probably break it. Just like tent poles not fully inserted into the next pole, it is very weak and easy to break if poles are not fully seated into each other and into the plastic feet.Test period was 7 days and used twice by myself and once by brother for additional feedback and help checking clearances while lying on it.Assembly was without the instructions, but were inside the pouch. I'm a old man, I don't want to use something if it requires instructions to use it.Disclaimer: I paid full price for this. I did not receive any compensation, discount, or incentive. I (nor anyone in my family) am not associated with the seller or manufacturer of the item. The company did contact me asking for feedback and I did not respond(as of this review).

Pros: Good idea.Cons:It's hard to put together. My did the first (and only) installation in our kitchen. I don't know how I could have done it without being sitting down on a stable chair. You really need both hands and a foot to bend the rails so they fitYou do hit the ground when sitting up. I suppose one might expect that, that can be an issue. To be fair, it held me fine when laying downThe rails look solid, but after one use one bent.I would have been so pissed to have taken this on a camping trip to find out this took extensive work to put together, only to find that I hit the ground, and then that my rails bent.Try it out at home before camping. If you are very strong and very light, you might be okay with this.*UPDATE* After the above posting, the seller contacted me, refunded my money, and let me keep the product (it really is damaged, but I don't have to deal with the return). They also sent apologies, and promises to provide a better product. This kind of support is unusual, and deserves a couple stars. I still think the cot is hard to put together, but would not hesitate trying again with this level of service.
