    What Happened?

*by A***E on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 17, 2015*

Yes, this was a real letdown. I kind of wonder if its Jim Eno's fault as producer. I say this because if you listen to the early live versions of these songs they have a lot more energy. Like Youtube search for live at the "Echoplex One Boy" and it sounds so much better than the studio version. I don't know why they changed guitar to a bring out a distracting cheezy tone.(it was better off lower and understated) While the intent of having a female singer duet for the song was a cool idea, the style singer they chose just doesn't work well. (singer suggested by Eno) While Nic's not bad in studio version here, his style was certainly better in the original version.Look up Pitchforks early youtube "chk chk chk "Byron"" video featuring what would be renamed "Even When the Water's Cold". So much more energy in the song. Studio version for some reason has some random girl vocals in the studio thrown in that just doesn't work. Why are we female chorusing what the male character is supposed to be saying in the girl's head? In the Pitchfork interview you can hear them saying they were getting to their roots and the album sounded real promising. Even later performances of this song I've seen are just so lacking in energy vs the early live version. In the same video you only hear a snippet of Californiyeah in the beginning of the Pitchfork video but it sounds a lot more exciting compared to what they actually ended up doing with the song. It is kind of barebones and boring now. You just start to fall asleep through it. Bring out the excitement of California!!! Some Myth Takes style swells could have really got this track going. Ain't that right?A snippet of some other great sounding song plays in the Pitchfork interview vid for 30 seconds that never happened.(maybe its just a cover?)I remember reading an interview where they were saying they were making their new songs for to play strong live shows. And Chk Chk Chk live performances are definitely one of their great strengths. Whether it was through Eno's direction or their own, they strayed away from the livelier versions in the album that ultimately became Thr!!!er.Tracks 2, 5, 7, and 8 kind have a certain underwhelmingness to them. Maybe one or 2 of these tracks would have been alright for the album but it probably has something to do with the tracks starting to wear down.I will grant you Fine Fine Fine is a cool different track with the band.(Which Eno's definitely gets some credit, he drums in it too)They wrap it up with a solid rockin Meet me at the Station.I can't help but be disappointed with 2,5, 6, 7, and 8 weighing down the album combined with weak renditions of One Boy and "When the water's cold" to drag it further down. Maybe if they had more tracks on the album I would have found more to enjoy. Come on !!! you can do more than 9 songs for an album!!! Blue was a Great track that should have made it to Strange Weather originally.I'm left with only particularly enjoying Fine Fine Fine and Meet me at the Station.I'm all for bands trying new things. I think its BS to say !!! haven't done that already. Their last 4 albums all sounded quite different from each other. While Strange Weather wasn't their strongest album you can't blame the band for mixing it up with the loss of Jerry Fuchs as Drummer, member Justin Vander Volgen, and of course John Pugh who especially started to push himself as a force in the band on Myth Takes.(And I'm not one of those people saying the band lost it with John leaving. !!! have had many great songs that weren't all just on John)That being said it was interesting to read an interview with Nick talking about John in the recording process. I think it was in regards to Strange Weather's release, Nic was saying he wondered what John would think about the album. He said that John was usually more critical than the rest of the band when it came to ideas in the songs. He said in a pitchfork interview John "had a prejudice against anything too candy-ass. He didn't want to do the Magnetic Fields song ["Take Ecstasy With Me"]. We had to make it good enough that he liked it. It was a good bar to set."And the results were great. John recently had 2 songs in 2013 under Free Blood that sounded rather !!!.(Free Blood is most likely dead now)So I propose John Pugh be the producer of the next album ;) Push the band bring back a little more oomph and fullness of sound. Its too bad the band and him don't get along anymore. Sounds like they might get Eno for their new album too.(band was happy with him) Hopefully new album turns out better than Thr!!!er. Keep trying new stuff guys, and more tracks per album ;) We know you got some lying around ....

    Great CD

*by B***F on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on October 10, 2013*

Those reviewers who say that !!!'s songs all sound alike just aren't listening. What all their songs have in common is the same BPM: about 150, which makes all the tracks impossibly danceable. Beyond that, the music is truly band music, with real instruments being played and vocals devoid of AutoTune. Personally, I like that. The music is tuneful and craftsmanlike, but without that annoying gloss that most pop music has. Despite their California glibness, these guys are thoughtful, too. There's a sarcastic song about religion ("Except Death"), another about romantic regret that's pretty honest for pop music ("One Girl/One Boy"). Throughout, there's a great variety of instrumentation, including a jazzy sax solo (I think that's "Get That Rhythm Right") and a rocking extended guitar solo ("Careful"). My favorite track is "Californiyeah," which is built around a booming bass line and layers of percussion. This is as good a combination of intelligence and pure dance joy as you're likely to find. I have no idea why these guys aren't famous.BTW, the !!! of the band's name refers to a sound in some East (?) African languages that is produced by popping the tongue off the roof of the mouth. If you want to hear the sound, just listen to that old John Mayall track, "Room to Move."

You should be rocking your head through the entire album.

Thr!!!er is a great combination of indie-rock, dance-punk, and general groove. It's unabashedly fun, and it's definitely an album where you rock your head in the car until you realize that you're driving at 100MPH. "Even When The Water's Cold" has such a great vibe to it, and "Station" shows them at them at their most stripped down, with a lot of fun harmonies and ridiculousness in-between.It's one of !!!'s tamer albums, so it's also a good place to dive into their discography if you've missed them in the past. I would recommend it to any LCD Soundsystem fans, with a stretch of comparing them to Chromeo and Hot Chip.Definitely one of my favorite albums of 2013.
