THE go to reference for all things BARSOOM
One of the greatest strengths of the stories told by Edgar Rice Burroughs (ERB) is his indepth world-building. Barsoom a.k.a. Mars is perhaps the best example of this wondrous detail. In his 11 Mars novels, Burroughs provides geography, culture, fashion, creatures, history, warfare, even a board game similar to chess and a dance. Reading the adventures of John Carter and others on Barsoom is like visiting another world.John Flint Roy's highly regarded "Guide to Barsoom" is one of my favorite reference books for the works of ERB. In one well-organized volume, Roy captures all of the details provided by Burroughs in his descrptions of life on Barsoom.Read Burroughs "Princess of Mars" and the subsequent Barsoom books. But take a copy of John Flint Roy's "Guide to Barsoom" with you. It is a travel guide that will enhance your experience and provide a rich background for further enjoyment. This book review by Jess Terrell

For Anyone Who Wishes to Know about Barsoom
This book is for anyone who is a fan of the Barsoom series of books. John Flint Roy has written a book that tells everything there is to know about this great series of stories, including people, places, animals, beliefs, and many more. It was obviously a labor of love in which Mr. Roy studied the series like a gourmet would study different types of food. The book also answers a number of questions that Edgar Rice Burroughs, unfortunately, created because he obviously didn't think the John Carter stories would be well received.

Great resource.
I'm a writer by trade and I wrote a five volume fiction about Barsoom. I used this book as a major reference every day. If you are a Barsoomie and enjoy Burroughs works of John Carter, you must have one. I had to buy a second because I wore out the first.

If it's not in here, it doesn't exist!
Everything about Barsoom is here, I applaud John Flint Roy for his exhaustive guide to Barsoom. After reading this book it made me want to read the entire series over again. Will not disappoint. Only gripe is that the map illustrations seem a bit blurry, probably because it's a reprint of the original. All in all though 5 stars.

The definitive Guide to Barsoom
Very well done reference guide that we all should be grateful is back in print. They leave out all reference to 'the Giant of Mars' as Mr. Roy felt it was not written by ERB, but otherwise, this book is incredibly detailed and a welcome addition to anyone who is a fan of the Martian Tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Invaluable Guide to Barsoom
A real labor of love and a pleasure to read and explore, much like Burrough's tales of Barsoom. Thank you for all the work that went into writing this guide. If a hard cover version was available, I'd purchase that too.

Every fan should have one
This is the most detailed reference guide to E. R. Burroughs Mars that I have seen. The only other source of simlar detail is the support material for the board game. Much of the material is available online but it is nice to have it in one volume. It is much easier to flick through a book than flick through web sites. If I have a criticism it is in the poor quality of the paper and the small format. I would love this book to be reprinted in a larger format partly because the maps of Barsoom are difficult to use. It would also be good to have it presented as the encyclopedia it actually is. Highly recommended to any John Carter fans. If it isn't in here then it probably isn't on Barsoom either.

A John Carter Dictionary!
With the release of John Carter the Movie this is a must! I started reading Edgar Rice Burroughs books over forty years ago and was hooked then. These stories were written approx 1912 a hundred years ago and still stand the test of time. The names sound fantastic but so are the stories we know Mars is not like this but the common thought now is that this is another dimension. So if you liked the movie get this book!
