Review: Great for Hard Drives/Video - I was looking all over for a FireWire splitter and this one does a great job. I am a video editor and need lots of FireWire ports. I have 3 external Hard Drives and my video camera running through this port and I can say it works perfectly. I use an Apple G5 and Final Cut, this product has helped me get the info I need onto my drives all while hooked into the same drive. As my monitor and G5 were running out of FireWire ports this literally saved the day for all my video needs. If you use FireWire a lot, and only use FireWire drives and cameras then this is a must by. I just wish I would have known about it sooner.
Review: Seems to work fine. - I recently replace my 2008 iMac with a late 2013 model, but the new computer doesn't have Firewire 400 ports for my old peripherals, just USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt. This hub gives me 5 Firewire 400 ports for those old devices (its 6th port connects it to my iMac via a Firewire 400 cable, a Firewire 800 to 400 adapter, and a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter, in series).

## Questions & Answers

**Q: will this work with standard definition broadcast video**
A: I don't see why it wouildn't! The Firewire ports on the Belkin hub work exactly like an original, motherboard or device Firewire port works, ie they are an exact mirror of the onboard ports in computers and devices. I myself have used my Belkin Firewire ports with a Sony Handicam movie camera, albeit a very nice one that we have had since about c. 2003 or 2004 if my memory doesn't escape me. It's the full boat job with every conceivable nod, wink, and extra feature that cameras using tape cartridges had back in the day, before the advent of the flash memory cameras so common today. The camera cost roughly $1500US with all its extra do-dads and options, so it's quite a state of the art device for turn of the century video. And the Belkin device worked flawlessly with my PowerMac G4 and later G5 towers, translating video after video into QuickTime movie format with Mac software of various types, all while the video signal was being run through the Belkin Firewire Hub. As to its ability to carry a video and audio signal effectively, that only has the limits of Firewire itself to be judged by, and firewire ports and hubs are capable of transducing and transmitting signal in, and out of the hub device through firewire cables. In fact with the camera in mind, it is fully capable of live transmission of its video and audio signals from the tapes it used through to a computer, or to a live transmitting device such as an HDTV, studio monitor, or any number of mediums I can think of offhand. So no, I never had any difficulty using my Belkin hub to transmit various audio and video signals through the hub and to the Macs or my monitor feed for live editing, which is tantamount to what you are asking about in a real world sense. So I don't see why the hub wouldn't act exactly like mine did when I used it for editing and transmitting video signals with audio through it via firewire cables to various exits and entries, be it computer, HDTV or monitor and my editing station, ie all the above. I always had faith in the Belkin hub to perform adequately in pushing video and audio signals to the things I used back then, before flash memory took over the movie making scene from tape and tape drive devices, so draw your own conclusions from my experiences with the hub, firewire cables, and video and audio signals, if you will. The Belkin hub is a quality piece of equipment and there is no doubt in my mind that it would work 100% with live or canned video/audio signals, bar none.

**Q: how does this connect to a pc? by usb?**
A: All the data ports on the hub are FireWire 400 (there is also a power connector for its power brick, which is about the same size as the hub). To use this hub, you would typically run a FireWire 400 cable from a FireWire 400 port on a PC or Mac to the hub, and you could then plug up to 5 FireWire 400 devices into the remaining ports.

**Q: Is it compatible with Window 7?**
A: There is no on computer GUI so it's purely an independent external device and compatible with any computer and OS¹. In fact it doesn't need a computer to work. It simply distributes the 1394 packets without changing them.¹ So long as the computer has a compatible 1394 intrface so any current interface should work just fine. It can work with any Mac OS, IOS (if you can find a 1394 interface for a tablet), Android, any PC OS, Linux, AIX, HP/UX, BSD,VMS, .... All that is needed is a 1394 interface and good luck finding one for DOS.

**Q: How does the belkin tb859ll/a, compare with the previous belkin f5u526-apl firewire hub?**
A: Hi. The Belkin F5U526-APL has a higher transfer rate than the Belkin TB859LL/A.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great for Hard Drives/Video

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Seems to work fine.

### ⭐⭐ kind of works
*by A***R on June 26, 2011*

Locks up my intel mac pro running snow leopard instantly every time it is plugged in or out. Wedged hard such that the machine is not even reachable by network for a clean restart. Must be hard reset by power-off. Save all documents, and be prepared for instant death when you bring this unit anywhere near your computer. If you enjoy living dangerously and are planning to install this on a mac, be sure to shutdown your machine first, plug in the device, then reboot. Given that, it seems to work. Also, comes packaged in the worst kind of blister pack that requires great care to open without tremendous risk to life and limb. If there were any viable alternative, I would investigate it seriously. Have to say, while the details may differ, this is pretty typical of the level of quality delivered by anything I have gotten from Belkin in many years. I'll give it two stars because, if you are desperate, and very, very careful, it can be made to work, and you may still have all your fingers.
