For my purposes, I want the unit to be unlocked when unpowered, and locked when powered. I was happy to see the unit had the bolt retracted in the box, so that seemed likely that it would do what I need. But I didn't know what I was going to do with four wires! So I started experimenting, and no matter what wire(s) I hooked up to which end of the 12V battery I was testing with, or which ones I touched together, I couldn't get the lock to operate. All I saw was a red light come on (when the red wire was attached to positive and the black to negative). I was beginning to think I've already fried the thing from hooking it up wrong when I finally found another review that mentioned a magnetic reed switch. It turns out red to + and black to - is all you need for wiring, but you ALSO need the other unwired box nearby. Then the lock bolt will deploy. This is a nice feature, but I wish I had known to expect it. Once I figured that out, it operates great from my 12V battery. I haven't mounted it to the door yet, but I don't expect any issues. I bought it for a door that has a dart board mounted to it. I have a dedicated spotlight for the dart board, turned on by a light switch, so I figured I might as well use the same switch to power a 12V DC adapter that will drive this latch. Turn on light to play darts, door locks automatically. If it saves one person from taking a dart to the face, it will be worth the little bit of time and money it took to install it. It even has a magnetic reed switch in the powered head so that power will not return to the unit unless the lower receiver is aligned under the unit. When the door release switch is pressed, the access control circuit will be temporarily powered off.
