What is a twist thermometer and how does it work? Galileo Galilei (1564 – 1642) was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who played a major role in the Scientific Revolution. His findings provided the framework for Newton’s laws of motion and Einstein’s theory of relativity. His discovery that the density and volume of a liquid changes in proportion to its temperature, inspired the invention and explains the accuracy of this thermometer. A twist thermometer is a sealed glass vessel containing a colored liquid. As the temperature of the liquid increases or decreases, the volume of this sealed liquid will change proportionately. A graduated scale is printed on the spout with ascending temperatures listed. To read the thermometer, observe the level of the colored liquid in the “spout” and the printed temperature that is closest to it. As the temperature lowers, the liquid will retract into the center of the vessel to show a lower temperature. As the temperature increases, the liquid line will move further out from the center.

The "twist" is that it doesn't work.
I received this for Christmas. The top temperature marked is 101. The liquid has never gone down that low... according to this thing, it's somewhere around 160 degrees in my house. I put it in the refrigerator to see if that would help - it did not budge. I sent an inquiry to glassic gifts asking how to resolve this and never got any reply. This bothers me especially because I gave an Admiral Fitzgerald glass from this company as a gift and now I have to wonder if it is as useless as the gift I received. Insert large frowny face here...
