**Q: what are the reading limits**
A: This gauge can read from 1 to 15 mils (.001 to. 015 inch) or 25 to 375 microns on steel only. It's important to remember that today many cars are completely covered with a variably thin coat of filler and then sanded to remove all minor imperfections before top coating. This thin filler is then detected as paint by the gauge.

**Q: Where is this part made?**

**Q: Will this gauge work on aluminum body panels?**
A: No.  It is a magnetic gauge.  Therefore, it only works on ferrous metals (steel, iron, etc.).  It will not work on aluminum.

**Q: Can it measure the thickness of zinc (for galvanized steel) ? If yes, what's the margin of error (x%) ?**
A: I cannot say for sure, but I do not see why it would not be able to measure the thickness of zinc, considering a zinc coating is non-metallic just like paint.  However, this gauge reads from.001" to.015" with plus or minus.001" accuracy.  Considering many zinc coatings are 0.0002" (zinc plating) to 0.008" (batch hot-dip galvanizing), this tool may or may not meet your requirements.  This tool's intent is to be a highly portable tool to measure paint thickness on automobiles, to look for previous paint or body repairs.

This is a great, simple tool for measuring paint thickness and finding previous body repairs. Is able to measure up to 0.015" of paint thickness. I performs pre-purchase inspections classic cars on a part-time basis and this tool helps find previous bodywork and gives my customers data on the amount of paint or filler on a vehicle. I highly recommend using one prior to buying a classic car!
