We purchased a pair of cotton curtains that help a little, but they are light filtering and only go so far in terms of insulating. After researching pre-made curtain liners as well as drapery fabrics, I selected this lining (interlining to be exact) because it is 100% cotton and is a heavy flannel meant for thermal insulation.My curtain panels are about 50in x 84in. This fabric is 54in wide. Since I couldn't find any specific information about the thermal capabilities of the fabric (more later), I decided to purchase 4 yds of the fabric (2yds = 72in per panel) to start with and more later if effective.The fabric arrived folded and cut as though directly from the fabric counter of a craft store. I confirmed that the fabric is 54in wide (photo attached) and that the yardage is true (photo attached for 4 yards folded). As with other fabrics, I washed this fabric to pre-shrink it before working with it.Considering that the width of the fabric is greater than my curtains, I trimmed about 4in from the fabric before hemming all the sides of each panel. I used this trimmed fabric to make button tabs (photo attached) for the top of each panel, fitting neatly in the spaces of the tabs of the curtains. As expected, the addition of the lining has darkened our living room - the lining is noticeably thicker than the curtains themselves (photos attached). In the afternoons, we can physically feel that the lining gets warm and that our living room stays cooler. Qualitatively, the thermal insulation property of this lining is good.For a quantitative assessment of the lining's effectiveness:Thermal insulation in engineering/architecture is quantified by an R-value, defined as the resistance to heat conduction. Physically, this R-value is the inverse of thermal conductivity over space (h in Newton's Law of Cooling). The higher the R-value, the more insulative the material, and materials' R-values are additive. So if the R-value of double paned glass is 1.7 and a curtain is 1.0, then the total R-value is 2.7. Using Newton's Law of Cooling, you can relate the R-value to a temperature difference (inside and outside), heat flow, and area. As such, if you can measure the temperature difference with and without the curtain lining, you can back out what its R-value is (same for the glass and curtains). To accomplish this, we need an instrument to measure temperature precisely like an infrared thermometer.
